| The Mercedes I - On Thanksgiving 1983, the 200' freighter's anchor lost its' hold on the bottom at the onset of an approaching coldfront and ended up onshore behind Palm Beach socialite and art collector Molly Wimont's estate. While Palm Beach County wanted the ship to be sunk in their own backyard, Broward County finagled it away and sank her the Spring of 1984 amid a great pyrotechnics show as large amounts of flammable liquid were used to make it a "really big show". Twenty years later, the fine little ship shows the ravages of time; her wheel house toppled, her cargo holds twisted and flattened, and she was pushed towards shore by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and is now in the middle of the third reef line. She still holds large amounts of fish and is best dove as a drift dive starting on the ship and then drifting off onto the reef. |
