| On our first day in D.C. proper, we started at the Holocaust Museum. Unfortunately, we don't have any pictures to share of that, but we would definitely recommend that you go if you ever visit the area. We spent several hours there and, like what happened the day before at Arlington, we were there so long that we weren't able to visit any other museums that day. So we decided to do the monuments instead. We started at the White House and ended up with a little adventure. In the top picture, James is posing in front of the White House. If you look carefully, you'll notice that he's in the process of moving away. That's because we were being told to clear out. All because, right after we got there, someone left a child-size backback in front of the fence area. The police officers there asked if anyone would claim it--they were practically begging! But when no one would say it was their backpack, everyone had to evacuate. So we went across the street, where James took Kristen's picture, which you can see in the second picture. You'll notice we're now further away from George W.'s place of residence and that the whole area behind us is clear of people. The next picture shows all of the people being herded even further back, behind the Christmas tree (which is, of course, not decorated right now). We found a bench and just watched this thing unfold. The sniffing dogs were brought in. More and more people came and were directed away from the White House. In the end, though, we think some poor kid was walking around D.C. without his backback because he accidentally left it somewhere. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The Squirrel While we watched the drama and had a snack, this squirrel came up to see what was going on. James fed it trail mix. It came back. He fed it some more. Then he had the nerve to pet it! The squirrel obviously thought this meant we wanted him closer because he proceeded to jump up on the bench next to us and nibble on our backback! That was enough for us. We took off pretty quickly. The moral of the story is: Squirrels are cute, except when they're sitting on the bench next to you. |
