| Galena, Alaska Welcome to our new home... |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Galena sits on the north bank of the Yukon River. The river is huge, and beautiful. Far off in the distance, you can glimpse some mountains, but it's very flat in Galena. Right now, before the onset of winter, you can't even tell you're in Alaska. Except that it is a very early fall. Early September and the leaves are turning and it's colder every day. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The airport and runway. This picture was taken on the south side of the runway. The airport and base are on the north side. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Frontier Flying, the airline most people use when flying in and out of Galena. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Left: There are quite a few Galena residents who own and fly their own planes. This one was just resting by this little pond. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Right: One of very few stop signs in Galena. We tried to figure out how many are in town and we are fairly sure that the number is less than five. In any case, this is a pretty rare sight around here. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Left: Only in Alaska. And for those of you in the lower 48, a snow-go is also known as a snowmobile. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Typical road in Galena, except this is not as dry and dusty as usual. It had rained earlier. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Galena is divided into three basic areas: base, old town, and new town. The base houses the school, the state troopers, and base caretakers. The airport also falls within this vicinity. Old town is southeast of the base and is home to the post office (right), the Yukon Inn (bar and snack bar, below left), the gas station (below the bar), and two of Galena's grocery stores (below right). Usually, if you're going "into town," this is where you're going. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The community center, right, is located between old and new town. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The radio station is just before new town, where you can find Sweetsir's, the other store in town. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
