| On our first full day in the D.C. area, we went out to Arlington National Cemetery with Julia's Aunt Becky. Becky was headed to her temporary home in Virginia, so she volunteered to drop us off. Then she decided to join us on the tour and we were definitely glad for the company (as much as we like each other, it's nice to be with other people sometimes). We were at the cemetery for almost 3 hours, making it too late in the day to do many of the other touristy things in the area. Also, during the changing of the guards, our camera batteries went dead (and before the really important part of the ceremony!!!). So we headed back to Baltimore after this. This may have been our only stop of the day, but it was definitely worth it. We saw the resting places of some of the most notable people in U.S. history and got some incredible views, like the one of the Washington Monument, right. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| JFK and Jackie's gravesites (right) and Bobby Kennedy's resting place (below--the only grave in the cemetery that is marked by a white cross). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Right: Part of the Kennedy Memorial--the quote is from JFK's famous speech--"Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country" | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers (left). Only the best of the best get the opportunity to guard this memorial, which is guarded 24/7. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Right: Arlington House. This house was once owned by Robert E. Lee. When he decided to join the Confederacy, a Union general with a grudge saw to it that this house and land were taken from Lee (by way of a technicality in the tax law). It was then decided that the land would be used as a national cemetary (a little ironic, from Lee's perspective). We were able to go on a tour of the house, which still contains many original pieces. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
