| We knew from the get-go that we would probably take a short trip into Mexico while in Texas, if only to be able to say that we stepped foot in all three countries in North America. Once in Odessa, we planned our trip, deciding to go to Del Rio (U.S. side) and Acuna (Mexico side). We invited Dara, one of James' step-sisters, along and headed down the interstate. We only ended up staying in Acuna for about 4 hours or so before heading back across the border to sleep. After all, what is there to do in a border town, besides eat, drink, and shop? Trust us--not much. The picture on the left was taken from our spot in the shade (the first bar we stopped at). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This picture was taken from the third bar we stopped at. We think. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| James, Kristen, and Dara. The first bar again. Can you tell it was HOT that day? That sweaty flushed look isn't JUST the alcohol. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Mmmmm.... Margaritas.... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We got serenaded and, no matter how bored Dara looks in this picture, they were actually very good. This was actually the second time they came around. The first time, Dara and Kristen were both yakking on the phone, so they moved on. Guess they weren't satisfied with having just James as an audience. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Left, Dara looks more amused now. Below, James prepares for his "Dr.Pepper." Supposedly, when you drop a flaming shot of something (whiskey?) in to the beer, it tastes just like Dr. Pepper. Awfully messy, though. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Corona Bar, right, is where Desperado (Quentin Tarentino, Antonio Banderas) was filmed. Inside, there is a section of a wall covered with pictures from the movie set. It's actually a nice place. We had our last drink there, as a matter of fact. There we are, below: Dara, Kristen, and James. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Right: Here's a shot of the U.S. border when we were coming back into the States. Our driver spoke absolutely ZERO English and none of us were fluent in Spanish (even though James claims he can carry a conversation), so we had some issues getting back to our hotel. Not to mention our fun at the border. The border agent (is that what you call them) wanted to know where we got these star things (they were Dara's). We were confused and a little freaked, thinking maybe they were stolen goods or something. Until the agent told us she had been trying to find them everywhere, but hadn't had any luck in Del Rio. Believe it or not, after a few drinks, that was pretty funny. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Driving through Texas on our way to and from Mexico, we noticed this phenomenon (right) occasionally. Make way for civilization! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| James and some cacti, on the way back from Mexico. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| On our shopping tour of Del Rio, we purchased a couple souvenirs for Riley and Avery, our two youngest nieces (from St. Louis). We got them a doll and the dress that Riley is wearing in these pictures. Kristen's sister said that at first she wouldn't put it on, but, just like a typical two-year-old, once it was on, she didn't want to take it off. She even twirled around in it with her favorite doll, Ba. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
