Just Like Mum Used to Make Introduction: A few years back, my great aunt passed away. To compound our sorrow, with her went all her fabulous recipes. She was the best cook I ever knew. What a shame that I can't recreate and share those delicious dumplings! With this in mind, I decided to take action. Why couldn't I write down all those great dishes and pass them on to the newlyweds in my family? My first problem came when I asked my mother how she made her famous stuffed peppers. Her answer was to take some ground meat, add a little bit of onion and a little bit of celery and maybe an egg.... And it went on and on like this with every recipe. So, more determined than ever, I decided to become a spy. (It should be noted here that Mom was notorious for leaving out essential ingredients when tell how something was made.) I helped, I watched, I estimated quantities. Then, when they weren't looking, I wrote them down. Now, when my son marries or moves out on his own, I can hand him this book and he can have all his favorites. And the best part is that they are explained so that even he can make them! Many thanks to the numerous friends and relatives who contributed to this book, with their eyes on our children's future. Please, take these recipes and invite the mother-in-law, she may still dislike you, but she will know her child is well fed. That may even earn you a certain amount of respect. (Don't tell her that you only cook once a month.) Finally -- enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! |
