Self- assertion is, as the name suggests, a style of behaviour in which you do not allow others to override whatever you do or say. This is not to say that you must argue the point with everybody but, rather, that you carefully assess each situation as you encounter it. If it meets with your approval then you accept it; if it does not then you discuss the matter calmy and positively with your colleague(s). It might just be that their approach is the more appropriate one in any given situation and you need to be prepared to evaluate that whilst bearing in mind that you have had a hand in the decision making process.

Using the timeworn method of calculating behaviour on a scale of 0-10, if you score "0" in your assessment of your self-assertion then your level of SA is, virtually, none existent; with a score of 2.5 you are mildly assertive; a score of 5 is right on the point at which you should be functioning. A score of 7.5 is very high and needs to be curtailed a little but a score of 10 suggests that you are far too aggressive. Ascore above about 6.5 and below 3.5 needs to be worked upon for the former your behaviour needs to be "toned down" somewhat and the latter need to be increased for adequate responses to many of the situations which you will encounter throughout your lifetime. Remember that "meekness" is more aptly described as submissive and those who demonstrate aggressive behaviour are usually avoided by the majority of people.
