The New York born- Detroit -bred singer has been singing since she was a little girl.Needless to say.Aaliyah was influenced by the Motown greats of her hometown of Detriot and when she had the opportunuity to attend the newly built Detroit high School for the performing Arts,she jumped at it.Actually,Aaliyah is the first professional to emerge from the school."she states that she has song in many talent shows,performed at weddings,she has sanged with Gladys Knight," she recalls.Aaliyah has known singer/producer R.Kelly since she was 12 years old and it was he who encouraged her to make the big step.The two originally met through Aaliyah's uncle,who is Kelly's manager.R Kelly entirely wrote and produce Aaliyah's first album.Age Ain't Nothin'But A Number.It immediately zoomed up the charts and the first single,"back & Forth," has established this youg singer as a mini-diaval!
