| Chapter 18 Notes Samuel was the last and greatest judge. Samuels mother promised him to God before his birth. Hannah, Samuels mother, left him at the temple after dedicating him to God. He was given difficult tasks from God. One task was to tell Eli, his teacher and a priest, that he was not being a good father. Elis sons were speaking poorly about God. God said he would punish Elis sons for their sins. Elis sons were killed in a battle in which the Ark of the Covenant was taken. Eli was so upset that fell off his chair, broke his neck, and died. Samuel was then made judge of Israel. In his old age, Samuel appointed his sons as judges. They were not good leaders. The people requested kings. At first, Samuel said no. After praying with God, he chose a king. Saul was chosen the first king. He was anointed king by Samuel. Later in his rule, Saul did not rule in the ways of God. God then sent an evil spirit that filled Saul. It made him angry and moody. His servants felt music would soothe him. David, a sheperd boy, played harp to calm Saul. David eventually became the second king.
