YUCATAN PENINSULA
Mexico
I've been to the Yucatan Peninsula several times on 2 and 3 week bike trips always between the months of January and March. I explored the Gulf Coast, the Caribbean Coast and the ruins and villages around Merida.

The
weather at this time of year can vary considerably. It can be cool and overcast but mostly its warm and sunny. It's never too hot to ride a bike. Its usually just right.

Except for the area south of Merida the
roads in this region are very flat. Any hills are short and not steep. Traffic is light and the roads I travelled on were all paved and in good condition.

Finding
food and water along my routes was not a problem. I often ate at road side food stalls or in markets. Bottled water and Coke is readily available everywhere.

This village is the site of extensive MAYAN RUINS. Most of the structures are still covered by lush, humid jungle vegetation.
I explored the sleepy fishing villages and beach towns along the GULF COAST and the Mayan Ruins in the PUUC HILLS area south of  MERIDA.

In this charming town you can admire exquisite colonial architecture and explore museums and handicraft markets.
MERIDA 1999, 2000, 2001
In this region south of Merida there are many abandoned Spanish Colonial Haciendas waiting to be restored to their original splendour.
Some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in Mexico can be found along this coast. The warm, shallow and gentle surf make this area ideal for long, lazy days lounging on the beach.

Located 75km south of Rio Lagartos, I visited this town during the immensly popular Feria de Los Tres Reyes.
