I have now been here for one week. As you can see from my gallery I have found a place to live. The set-up is alright; I have a room off of the kitchen that leads to the front yard. There is one picture taken from the kitchen through my room. A maid is employed full time to look after the place and apparently it is her job to clean my dishes! Mind you, I don't cook much as the food in the grocery stores isn't very good.
Last night I had the bushman's special at a restaurant. It consisted of a kebab made up of zebra, crocodile, spring bok, ostrich, and some antelope like animal. It was OK. Beer is cheap here, approximately $1 a bottle.
I suppose I should say something about my first impressions... It is much more civilised (sic) than I thought it would be. As well, it doesn't seem as foreign as I first imagined. Everyone speaks a bit of English so they see the same movies, listen to the same music, watch the same crappy programs on tv etc. Everybody has a cell phone here! It really isn't the Africa that I imagined. However, I hear that it is very different outside of the city.
I am going to Victoria Falls at the end of next week. It is a 1.5 day bus journey that takes us near to the Angola border. I've been told that there is a military escort for part of the journey! While there we're planning to do some white-water rafting which should be cool. After 7 days I return and then go on this organised tour in the South of Namibia. We'll be visiting this huge canyon where the average day-time temp. is 40 degrees! As well, we will visit an abandoned diamond mining town, the world's largest dunes (and maybe surf down them), and visit some coastal town. I return after the new year and then have to really start work...
Speaking of work - this web-page construction is frustrating. I haven't done much - I am spending today trying to understand this web-editor. I'm glad nobody is monitoring my progress or else they know I haven't done a thing today! (I hope they don't visit my website...) On another note - I have AOL and ICQ instant messenger so if anyone wants to talk... However, my workday starts at 1am your time and I leave here just when you get to work. Sorry that the gallery pages still take so long to load - the pictures files are much smaller now but the main page still takes a while to load. I hope to have this sorted out soon.
