This is the Seed List for Trial Gardening in the Continental USA (unless otherwise decided) for the Fall of 2002 through the Spring of 2003, including indoor trials where sensible. (All currently from Pinetree Garden Seeds, superseeds.com -- description and directions are the companies, with my comments in square brackets)

Crucifers:
Broccoli Early Dividend (h) - Start in/out 1/4" deep. Space 1 per s/f. Very early 5" heads. Large prolific side shoots. 43 days
Broccoli Small Miracle (h) - Start in/out 1/4" deep. Space 1 per /f. Compact plants with abundant side shoots. 54 days
Brussels Sprouts (h) - Start indoors 1/4" deep. Trans 1 per s/f. 3' plants producing many fine-flavored sprouts. 88 days
Cauliflower Early Dawn 40 (h) - Start in/out 1/4" deep. Space 1 per s/f. Self-blanching, large heads. Smooth and dense. Great taste. 68 days
Cauliflower Silver Cup 40 (h) - Start in/out 1/4" deep. Space 1 per s/f. Small white heads. Suitable for Fall. 40 days
Chinese Cabbage Spring (h) - Start indoors 1/4" deep. Trans while still cool, or plant in July for Fall crop. Large heads. 60 days
Mini Cabbage Gonzales (h) - Start in/out 1/4" deep. Space 1 per s/f Firm heads about the size of a softball. 55 days

Leafies:
Celeriac Large Prague - Start indoors 1/4" deep. Cousin of celery. Harvested for ugly-but-tasty root. Dig mid-September 112 days
Cutting Celery Zwolsche Krul - Plant in Spring 1/4" deep. Trans 1 per s/f. Leaves used like parsley. Use thin hollow stems in soups [or as drink stirrers, like in tomato/vegetable juice!] 60 days
Mache Verte de Cambrai - Plant 1/2" deep. Can be Summer or Fall crop. Flat, fine -textured leaves w/nutty flavor. 45 days
Purslane Goldgelber [not the lawnweed] - Plant 1/4" deep in Spring. Large, meaty leaves about the size of a silver dollar. Noce citric flavor [citrus] 26 days
Tah Tsai Ryokusai #2 (h) - Start in/out 1/4" deep. Space 1-2 per s/f. Spoon-shaped leaves form large rosette. Use raw or cooked. [Japanese] 50 days

Melons:
Melon Fastbreak (h) - Start indoors up North. Trans 1 per 4 s/f. Very early. Heavily netted fruits have sweet orange flesh. 67 days
Melon Minnesota Midget - Start indoors up North. Trans. 1 per 4 s/f, careful of roots. Compact vine producing 4" melons. 60 days
Melon Orange Blossom (h) - Start indoors up North. Trans 1 per 4 s/f. Orange-fleshed sweet honeydew w/yellow skin. 86 days
Watermelon Garden Baby (h) - Plant 1" deep when soil warms 2 plants per hill. Short vined. Round fruits, excellent flavor. 70 days
Watermelon Sugar Baby - Plant 1" deep when soil is warm 2 plants per hill. Round, thin-rind fruit, 6-10 pounds. Sweet flavor. 80 days

Cukes:
Cucumber Homemade Pickles - Plant when soil warms up 1" deep 5-6 seeds per s/f. Short, prolific vines. Perfect for a variety of pickles. 54 days
Cucumber Spacemaster - Plant when soil warms up 1" deep 5-6 seeds per s/f. Full size slicer on a 3' vine. Disease resistant. 59 days
Cucumber West India Gherkin - Plant when soil warms up 1" deep 5-6 seeds per s/f. Small ova spiny fruit. Unique. 65 days
Cucumber Lucky Strike - Plant when soil warms up 1" deep 5-6 seeds per s/f. Short pickler. Good color and flavor. 54 days

Nightshades:
Tomato Yellow Bell - Start indoors 1/4" deep. Trans 1 per s/f. "Roma" size and shape. Bright yellow paste type. Indeterminate. 62 days
Tomato Sungold (h) - Start indoors 1/4" deep. Trans 1 per s/f. Golden-orange cherry variety. DELICIOUS flavor. Indeterminate. 60 days

Okra:
Okra Cajun Delight (h) - Plant when soil warms 1/2" deep. Space 4-6 plants per s/f. [Is this real???] Nutty flavor. Heavy yields. 57 days
Okra Red Burgundy - Plant 1/2" deep when soil warms. Ornamental/edible, red stems and pods. [Rich burgundy red color. Think they turn green when cooked.] Productive 55 days

Peas:
Petit Pois Citadel (h) - Plant 1" deep early Spring. Pods 2" long, filled with small sweet peas. Exceptional yields. [site brags children eat them in the garden like candy]60 days
Pole Lima Sieva - Plant 1" deep 6 around a pole when soil has warmed. Broad flat beans can be eaten green or dried. 72 days
Snap Pea Sugar Lace [semi-leafless!] - Plant 1" deep in early spring. Large quantities of 3" pods on dwarf, semi-leafeless plants. Unique. 65 days
Snow Pea Oregon Sugar Pod II - Plant 1" deep early spring. Edible podded pea. Harvest before peas form. Does better with support. 65 days

Potato:
Gilroy Potato (F1 h) - [Pelleted seed, 1-3 per trial. Treat like tomato] Start indoors 1/4" deep. Trans 1 per s/f. White-fleshed med. size round potato 110 days

Pumpkin:
Pumpkin Small Sugar - Plant when soil is warm 1" deep. Good choice for pie--not stringy.... 95 days

Squashes:
Squash Burpee Butterbush (w) - Plant 1" deep when soil warm. Space 3 seeds per hill. Short-vined, smallish fruit. Abundant. 75 days
Squash Carnival (w) (h) - Plant 1" deep 3 seeds per hill when soil warm. Colorful acorn type. [Very decorative in baskets and bowls--then still edible] Semi-bush plants, heavy yields. 85 days
Squash Cream of the Crop (w) - Plant 1" deep in warm soil. Creamy white skin and flesh. Acorn type. [Elegant looking, perhaps?] 75 days
Squash Delicata (w) - Plant 1" deep in warm soil. Space 3 seeds per hill. Fairly compact. Sweet, meal-sized fruit [not real large] Good keeper 97 days
Squash Table Ace (w) - Plant 1" deep in warm soil 3 seeds per hill. Compact growth. Abundant yields. Excellent flavor! 75 days
Squash Tetsukabuto (w) (h) - Plant 1" deep when soil warm 3 per hill. Roundish, dark green fruit. Yellow flesh. AKA Japanese pumpkin [sweet and creamy like custard, needs nearby hubbard/buttercup/butternut pollinator] 91 days
Squash Sweet Meat (w) - Plant 1" deep in warm soil 3 seeds per hill. Nice size. Dry flesh w/sweet nutty flavor. Good keeper. "A customer reports that it does very well in dry conditions, freezes well without blanching, and is a good pumpkin substitute." 100 days

Roots: [Quick summary]
Beets: Plant 1/2" deep. SqFt plant spacing works.
Beet Action (h) - Dark red, fine textured, can harvest over long period. 50 days
Beet Red Ace (h) - Early maturing, good size/shape/color 50 days
Beet Lutz Winter Keeper - Old variety, retains sweetness during storage 80 days
Beet Burpee's Golden - Golden yellow, lower germination rate. 55 days
Beet Cylindra - Carrot shaped, ideal for slicing 58 days

Carrots: Plant 1/4" deep. SqFt plant spacing works.
Carrot Tokita's Scarlet - Broad-shouldered, 7" chantenay type [holds flavor in ground if harvested late]. 73 days
Carrot Thumbelina - Round, smooth roots, best at 1/2" 65 days
Carrot Adelaide (F1 h) - Baby carrot [REALLY--not chopped and "sharpened" bulk thin carrots, 3-1/2" long, very sweet]. 65 days
Carrot Little Finger - 20-25 per s/f. Delicious, crunchy little carrots. 50 days
Red-cored Chantenay - Short, fat 5-6". Smooth orange skin 75 days
Carrot Nutri-Red - 8" imperator type. "NOT intended for eating raw." ["high in lycopene which is thought to be an agent in helping to prevent some cancers"] 74 days

Parsnip: Plant 1/2" deep.
Parsnip Harris Model - Nice, white, straight roots with pleasing flavor. Best after a frost. [great roasted with carrots, cut in chuncks, 50/50] 100 days

Radishes: 1/2" deep unless noted. SqFt spacing works.
Radish Black Spanish - Old, heirloom radish. Winter keeper. White flesh. 70 days
Radish Daikon Tokinashi - Tolerates heat well, grown through summer for Fall crop. White, tapered, 12" roots. Crisp, crunchy. 45 days
Radish Easter Egg - 1" deep. Tangy, multicolored. Each one a surprise. 28 days
Radish German Giant Parat - Thin to 1" apart. Can grow to baseball size. Crisp and mild at any size. "Handles drought, rarely splits" 37 days
Radish Green Heart - Long green roots. Excellent keeper. Good raw/cooked/pickled [probably in soy sauce, rice wine vinegar and sugar]. 50 days
Radish Oriental Seedpod/Rattail - 1" deep. Harvest seedpods [Chop into food. Let some seedpods dry for seed]. Harvest begins 50 days
Radish Rose Heart - Green skin with rose red flesh. STRIKING. [Striking beauty!--pretty contrast to sliced Green Hearts, with pale green flesh] 50 days
Radish White Icicle - Mild white roots. Best harvested immature. 30 days

Rutabaga: 1/2" deep, 4 per s/f
[Rutabagas need a warm summer and freezing weather late in the year - signals the roots to store sugars. I'd plant them anyway, just so I can say, "Rutabaga"!]
Rutabaga Doon Major - Purple topped globe roots. Great for storing. 87 days
Rutabaga Laurentian - Large, nice textured, mild flavored root. Stores well. 90 days

Salsify: 1/2" deep, 2 per s/f.
Salsify Sandwich Island Mammoth - 8" tapered root. Harvest after a frost. 118 days

Turnip: 1/4" deep, 9 per s/f.
Turnip Royal Crown (h) - Good tasting root. Good growth of greens. [Mash with white potatoes, 50/50] 52 days
Turnip Tokyo Cross (h) - Good for greens, leave some for tasty roots. 30 days
