Jade's Pittsburgh Pirates Site
The Pittsburgh Pirates are rich in baseball histroy and tradition as can be seen in these pictures of an old tobacco baseball cards. On April 30th 1887 the Pittsburgh Alleghenies played their first National League game beating the Chicago White Stockings 6-2. In December of 1889 the Alleghenies were renamed the Piriates because they signed a player, Louis Biebauer, away from another team that really wanted to sign him. It was reported in the news that Pittsburgh Alleghenies were like Piriates and the name stuck. In 1901 the Pirates won their first first National League pennant with a 90 and 49 record. They were led by Honus Wagner who had a .353 batting average and 126 RBI's. Just one year latter in 1902 the Pirates won their second National League pennent with an incredible 103 and 36 record finishing 27 and 1/2 games in ahead of the second place team. The Pittsbugh Pirates still on a roll in 1903 won the first World Series game ever in baseball history although they ended up losing the Series. On October 16th 1909 The Pirates led by Babe Adams and Honus Wagner win the decisive 7th game of the World Series beating the Detroit Tigers and Ty Cobb 8-0 to win their first World Series. October 19th 1925 in game 7 of the World Series at Forbes Field, Kiki Cuyler hits an 8th inning bases-loaded two out double off of Walter Johnson to led the Piriates to a 9-7 victory and their second World Series. On April 17th 1955 a 20 year old rookie from Puerto Rico by the name of Roberto Clemente make his major league debut at Forbes Feild.
On October 16th 1960 in Game 7 of the World Series at Forbes Field, Bill Mazeroski leads of in the bottom of the 9th inning with the game tied 9-9 with the heavily favioried New York Yankees hitting the most dramatic home run ever in baseball and World Series histroy with a blast over the left field wall bringing the Pittsburgh Pirates thier 3rd world championship.
On the 17th of October 1971 Roberto Clemente homers and Steve Blass throws a 4 hitter as Pittsburgh win game 7 of the World Series 2-1 over Baltimore to gain their 4 World Series Title. On October 17th 1979 the Pirates once again found themselves in a game seven of the World Series at Baltimore where Willie Stargell's third home run of the Series lifts Pittsburgh  to a 4-1 victory gaining them their 5th World Series Championshion after they were down 3 game to 1 in the Series and gaining Stargell the World Series MVP award.
