Some of the descendants of the powerful dogs that drove and guarded the cattle that accompanied the Roman army in its march across Europe were left behind to guard outposts along the route. One such point was in the area of Wurttemburg, Germany. Here the mastiff-type dogs interbred with local herding dogs to become a strong, trustworthy breed that was called 'the butcher's dog of Rottweill' because the dog guarded his money when the pair were enroute to the cattle sales, and drove the beef-on-the-hoof home on the return trip. Then, with the advent of better roads and mechanized transport, the courageous dogs were no longer needed and might have disappeared altogether had it not been for an interest in preserving rare and unusual breeds. This is a powerful, smooth-coated dog. Males measure from 24 to 27 inches at the shoulder; females two inches less. The coat is harsh, and black with rich tan to mahogany markings. Grooming consists of regular, thorough brushing. A devoted family and protection dog, the Rottweiler needs lots of outdoor exercise. He has proven to be an able police dog and does well in obedience. Training should start early. |
