| Faribault Daily News report: 29 young people and seven adults, including, one guest, from Trinity Lutheran Church will make up Minnesota's largest delegation to the Inteftational Walther League convention meeting in Oxford,Ohio's, Miami University August 10-14. The convention, sponsored by the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod, will play host to more than 2,000 young people from all over' the United States, Canada, and a number of foreign countries. Members of the local delegation, along with their fellow compatriots from the state, will be emphasizing Minnesota's Centennial year. Going with the Leaguers are also the greetings of Governor Orville L. Freeman, addressed to the convention and calling attention to Minnesota's Centenial year. Special Centennial banners and flags will be carried by the Faribault Leaguers. In addition they will wear black derby hats bearing a Centennial patch, a golden gopher and a ribbon indicating Minnesota as "the land of sky blue waters". Each car will also display large Centennial door decals. Appropriate trunk stickers and door signs have been painted and will identify the local group. At the convention itself, Faribault young people will take an active part promoting publicity in behalf of their community. A Tilt-a-whirl banner, colored post cards and other material will be presented. Faribault "Pak-a-robes" have been made up with especially designed League emblems and are being presented to leaders of the International Walther League. Attractions at the convention, in addition to the business sessions and worship, recreational and fellowship activities, will be fair night and the final talent demonstrations by League members from districts all over the United States. The Leaguers have been promised an interesting and inspirational topic presentation in the form of the study of the Old Testament book of Jonah. While on the trip the local young people are planning to stay a night at Valparaiso, IN, where they will also tour/the campus and see the newly constructed college chapel, one of the largest such chapels in the world. A stop at Dunes State Park (Indiana) on Lake Michigan has also been planned. Again this year the Trinity Junior and Senior Leagues have been planning and working so that they they might attend this international convention. Car washes, various socials, slave sales and other projects helped to raise necessary funds for the trip. Trinity congregation also voted $300.00 to help defray convention costs. The Leaguers themselves had agreed to cover about two-thirds of the convention expenses from their own earnings. And once again members of the church are providing their own cars and arranging to take time off so that they might drive the young people to the convention. A seven car caravan will be needed to transport the Leaguers to and from their destination. Leaguers attending from Trinity are: Willard Abraham, Sandra Ballenthin, Daniel Bertram, Harold Borchert, Jr., Marlene Dallmann, Sharon Degen, Ronald Degner, Walter Doyle, Caroline and Daniel Dunn, Robert Flom, Joanne Fuchs, Karen Heyer, Charles Kuntze; Joe Maas, Larry Mensing, Robert and Donna Murphy, Evelyn and Mary Nusbaum, Lucille Paschke, Richard Purfeerst, Sandra Radke, Connie Stark, Karen and Wayne Stuemke, Donald Schultz, and Sandra Zahn. Of the group Charles Kuntze, Donald Schultz, Joanne Fuchs and Willard Abraham are Senior League officers. Robert' Flom, Mary Nusbaum, Sandra Radke, Karen Heyer and Sandra Zahn are Junior League officers. Wayne Stuemke and Willard Abraham are the retiring presidents of their respective Leagues. Elected voting delegate for the convention sessions is Harold Borchert, Jr. Donna Murphy is the alternate. In charge of arrangements for the Minnesota band are Wayne Stuemke and Caroline Dunn. Marlene Dallmann and Sharon Degen are in charge of costumes for a convention presentation. Adults accompanying the young people are Willard Abraham, Sr., Mrs. Fred Degner, Teacher Elmer Fritz,, Lowell Hetletvedt, Mrs. Charles Purfeerst, Pastor Dale Young and Jane Velzke. After the cars are packed Saturday morning, a short service has been planned for the group with Pastor 0. H. Cloeter in charge. Members and friends of the young people are invited to attend the 7 a.m. service and then see the car caravan get under way. |
