Whatever Happened To Truth

John 18

33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? . . .

Pilate lived in age of Gnostics, Epicureans, Stoics, Platonists, and other philosophical theorists, and his question was probably as sincere as it could be. What is truth? This one says this; that one says that; theories abound, but who is right? (Not unlike our world today.) One is left to wonder, "Does anybody really know what he is talking about?"

Truth is defined as - firmness, sureness, reliability, stability, continuance. Truth is something that is constant. It never changes. It outlasts time itself. It is clearly defined and is not subject to the ever-changing opinions of men.

For example, 2+2 =4. That is not my opinion; that is fact. I don't care what kind of new math you use, if you have two marbles in this hand and two marbles in the other, you have a total of four marbles. That is the truth and it cannot change.

History bears out that George Washington was the first president of the US. Regardless your opinion, that is an unchangeable fact. You can declare that Abe Lincoln was the first, but no historian would agree with you. Truth is truth, no matter how you slice it.

But what is truth? Where do we find the real thing?

Relativism

We live in an age of relativism. Everything is relative. There is no absolute truth. The Bible talked about these days.

2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; (AV)

2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (AV)

One writer predicts "… we are rapidly heading for a state of intellectual anarchy in which the difference between truth and falsehood will not longer be recognized."

Note these alarming statistics:

64% of Americans believe, "Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims and all others pray to the same god, even though they use different names for that God."

64% of Americans agree with the statement, "All religions are equally good."

62% agreed, "It does not matter what religious faith you follow because all faiths teach similar lessons about life."

72% of Americans agree, "There is no such thing as absolute truth; two people could define truth in totally conflicting ways, but both could still be correct."

72% agree, "There are no absolute standards that apply to everybody in all situations."

53% percent of those who claim there is no such thing as absolute truth identify themselves as born-again Christians.

42% of those who identify themselves as evangelical Christian agree, "There is no such thing as absolute truth …"

Among teens:

55% of all teenagers and 30% of born-again teens agree, "It does not matter what religious faith you follow because all faiths teach similar lessons."

55% of teens and 36% of born-again teens believe, "Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Jews and all other people pray to the same God, even though they use different names for their God."

(Folks, let me emphatically say that 'religion is the curse of mankind; Jesus is she salvation of God'. We are not talking about mere belief systems here. Salvation is not a matter of religion; it is a matter of a relationship with a Savior.)

A college professor posed a hypothetical situation to a class of students and reports these findings:

"No one in the whole class … would go out on a limb and take a stand against human sacrifice."

Another professor states, "Whatever else students may dare to do, they will not risk being thought of as moral absolutists … Almost every student entering the university believes, or says he believes, that truth is relative."

The value of truth

Joh 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (AV)

We need to realize that mankind is in bondage to the values and philosophies of other men, and that Jesus came to set us free from bondage. The truth will free you from falsehood. The truth will free you from condemnation. The truth will free you from the power of sin, death and hell.

If a young person fails to embrace truth as an objective that governs their lives, they will be:

36% more likely to lie to a parent;

48% more likely to cheat on an exam;

65% more likely to mistrust people;

2 times more likely to try to physically hurt someone;

2 times more likely to view pornography;

2 times more likely to get drunk;

2 times more likely to steal;

3 times more likely to use illegal drugs;

2 times more likely to be disappointed;

2 times more likely to be angry with life;

2 times more likely to lack purpose;

2 times more likely to be resentful;

6 times more likely to commit suicide.

Sink or Swim

If Christian thought seems narrow to you, consider this:

If you are dropped into the middle of a body of water, you have only two options - sink or swim. We may want the options to be broader and more varied. We may want to do something else, but, like it or not, sink or swim is all there is.

It's the same with life. You are either saved or lost. There are no other choices.

God said:

De 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: (AV)

There seems to be only two choices offered here, death or life.

What is truth?

God's Word

God's Word is truth!

Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. (AV)

Consider this Proof

The combined probability of just 3 particular biblical prophecies being fulfilled by any one man, especially when he had no control over the circumstances, would be 1 in 120,000. It is a staggering thought that God would be so bold as to predict such details concerning the life of one man when there are so many chances in life of something changing or altering the plan.

When we consider 11 prophecies about Messiah -

There is one chance in 10 billion times a billion that the prophets could have accurately predicted these 11 specifics by chance, or that one man's life could fulfill these detailed prophecies by chance alone. It is obviously impossible. Also, consider that some of these prophecies were given almost 1000 years before Jesus was born.

Plus, there are other considerations. That his hands and feet would be pierced was predicted 500 years before crucifixion was invented by the Romans.

When we consider that there are 48 major prophecies given in the Old Testament about the promised Messiah, the odds of one life fulfilling all 48 prophecies are astronomical. To illustrate this point, imagine that someone dropped a diamond ring from a plane somewhere over one of the oceans. You enter a bet that you can locate it with just one try using a long line and a fishhook. You can wander over the earth's 197,000,000 square miles of ocean in your boat for as long as you like. When you feel lucky, stop, drop the line and try to hook the ring lying thousands of feet below on the ocean floor. You only get one try.

Your odds of finding the ring are precisely equal to the odds against the biblical prophets correctly predicting just those 11 specific details in the life of Messiah - not to mention the other 37 prophecies.

Now, let's push that even farther. There are 333 details in the predictions of scripture concerning the person and career of Messiah. The chances? 1 in 840,000,000,000,000,000 (840 followed by 15 0's).

What's wrong in the world today

Ro 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. (AV)

That's why we see perversion on the rise, the decay of morality, and violence on every front.

Where was God when the school shootings have taken place? He hasn't been welcome in the schools since 1962 when MM O'Hara got prayer taken out of school.

What is truth? Jesus is the embodiment of truth.

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (AV)

Whatever else you may think of Jesus Christ, historical evidence testifies that he fulfilled 48+ prophecies and 333 details about his coming. He split time and divided history.

The claims Jesus made and the things He did set Him apart from every other person in history. He walked on water, turned water into wine, fed thousands with a sack lunch, healed the sick, raised the dead - and he claimed to be the literal Son of God.

If you were to ask Mohammed if he was the son of God, he would say, "God has no son." Ask Confucius and he would say, "Your question is irrelevant." Ask Buddha and he would say, "We are all God." Ask Jesus and he would say as He did to Peter, "Who do you say that I am?"

That's the question you have to face today - Who is Jesus? He was either the most deluded lunatic that ever lived, the most skillful liar that ever lived, or He was truly the Lord of all the universe.

If he was a lunatic or a liar, then you'd best dismiss all thoughts of Him today. But if He is Lord, then you'd better bow your knee to Him now while there is still time. For soon the trumpet will blast and the Lord will descend with a shout, and the saints will meet him in the air, and the rest will face Judgment.

Where will you be on that day?
