Soon & Very Sooner Than You Think
The Second Coming is the greatest single theme in Scripture. While there are more than 300 prophecies in the OT regarding His first coming, there are more than 8 times as many verses devoted to His second coming. If the return of Christ is of such vital importance to God, we must not ignore the signs.
One of the key passages concerning the second coming is the words uttered by Jesus himself in Matthew 24.
Matthew 24
3 And as he sat on the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what [shall be] the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
4. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled: for [these things] must needs come to pass; but the end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines and earthquakes in divers places.
8 But all these things are the beginning of travail.
9 Then shall they deliver you up unto tribulation, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all the nations for my name's sake.
10 And then shall many stumble, and shall deliver up one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray.
12 And because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold.
13 But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come.
Let us consider the signs Jesus highlighted.
In AD 132, Simon Bar Kochba led the Jews in a furious revolt against the Romans. This was the kind of Messiah the Jews were looking for. He was acknowledged as the Messiah. The revolt failed, 3 million Jews died and the remainder were dispersed for almost 1800 centuries. People are still looking for a Messiah that will lead them into whatever their particular goal may be. This is the real danger – people want a Messiah molded in their own image. The world offers them plenty – Guru Maharaj Ji, Sun Myung Moon, Charles Manson, Jim Jones, Ron L. Hubbard, Deepak Chopra, David Koresh, Applewhite. Etc. The list could go on forever.
In all of recorded history the world has suffered 13 years of war for every single year of peace; but since 1945 the pace has increased tremendously, with more than 300 wars being fought in the past 41 years. Since 1945, not one single day has passed without the waging of some sort of war or conflict somewhere in the world. To make matters worse, unlimited military budgets have produced the means of massive worldwide destruction; nuclear, chemical, biological weapons and an astronomical amount of conventional weapons are now available. The cost of a single Exocet air-to-ship missile would equal the annual income of more than 10,000 people in most Third World countries. Every gun that is made, every warship that is launched, every rocket fired, is a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. The world is not spending money alone on arms. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. Every destroyer costs new homes for 8000 people.
There are 32 million soldiers around the world. Close to 50% of all scientists work on weapons research, while over 40% of all funds spent on scientific research are focused on arms. Tiny Israel is confronted with a military threat from the Arab nations alone which is stronger than the combined military strength of all the NATO forces.
Israel is surrounded by enormously well armed Arab nations with virtually unlimited military support from Russia. (Just in recent weeks we have seen Russia side with Iraq against Israel.) Our century has see the perfection of mass warfare in which all elements of society unite to either annihilate the opponent or obtain unconditional surrender.
Seven nations, including Israel, now possess more than 60,000 nuclear warheads. The question regarding WWIII is not ‘if’, but ‘when’. One nuclear scientist, when asked what weapons would be used to fight WWIII replied, "I’m not sure. But I’ll tell you what will be used to fight WWIV. Rocks."
Our peace and disarmament treaties are a mockery. Only a small number of obsolete weapons are dismantled, and the parts are used to make new weapons. Since 1947, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has displayed a clock on its cover which symbolizes how close these specialists feel we are to a nuclear Armageddon. Their clock now shows only 3 minutes to midnight. (That was in 1990).
Nuclear and political scientists from MIT and Harvard met in November of 1975 and concluded that a thermonuclear war would certainly occur before the year 2000. The only way to prevent such a war would be a decision by all nations to surrender their sovereignty to an authoritarian world government. The Bible has already predicted that very scenario.
There is drought and famine throughout Africa, India and Southeast Asia. Over 40 million may starve to death in the Sahara region of Africa. Russia and China are not able to feed themselves. One third of the world is approaching starvation. The amount of agricultural land is decreasing rapidly. New deserts are growing at the rate of 14.8 million acres every year. Over 26 billion tons of topsoil are lost each year and the tropical forests, which produce significant amounts of our planet’s oxygen are shrinking by 27 million acres per year. Our soils are so depleted that enormous amounts of fertilizer are required on every acre of farmland. The ‘greenhouse effect’ which seems to be caused by our environmental pollution, is contributing to the word drought in the last 200 years. The world population is growing at the rate of 220,000 people per day. 90 % of them will be born in Third World countries where the prospects for food growth are the poorest. At the present rate of growth, in 600 years there will be standing room only – one person per every square meter of land on the globe.
The moral tragedy here is that less than 1% of our annual world arms expenditure would solve the world hunger problem within several years.
Today we face incredible pollution and ecological problems which appear virtually unsolvable. Hazardous waste dumps are hidden in every community, leeching out toxic elements into water supplies.
The continued heavy use of pesticides has helped produce new strains of insects, superbugs, which cannot be controlled. Children living in homes whcihc use gaarden pesticides have a 600% greater risk of developing leukemia.
Third World famine is due to the fact that 1/3 of all food produced is destroyed by rats and other pests. In many cities the rats outnumber the humans.
AIDS is the deadliest plague in mankind's history. It has a 100% death rate. Studies indicate that over 1 1/2 million people in North America alone will die from this tragic disease, which so far shows no signs of a cure. In countires like Uganda, estimates are that 20 - 50% of the population are infected.
In the 70 years from 1900 to 1969, there were 48 earthquakes. In the next 23 years, 1970 to 1993, there were 176. They are happening with greater frequency and intensity than ever before. In the last days, when Russia attacks Israel, there will occur the strongest earthquake in history.
Eze 38:19 For in my jealousy [and] in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; (AV)
Eze 38:20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that [are] upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. (AV)
During the last 15 years, the General Assembly of The United Nations has spent enormous amounts of time in debates and condemantion of Israel. An automatic majority of Warsaw Pact and Third World nations can be counted to vote in favor of any resolution condemning Israel.
Satan hates God's people, be they Jews or Chrsitians.
We have seen the disintegration of the traditional family over the past few decades. The two parent home is becoming the exception rather than the rule. Divorces are exceeding marriages in some communities. Manmy hospitals in America register more abortions than live births. The figure exceeds one million annually in North America. Self has become more important than relationship.
Society is breaking down at an alarming rate. Violent crime, child abuse, wife-battering, and even abuse of aging parents by their children are proof that 'love has grown cold'.
The promary fulfillment of this prophecy will occur during the great Tribulation when the Two Witnesses and the 144,000 Jewish witnesses will preach the message of John the Baptist - "Repent! The Kingdom of God is at hand."
Rev 7.9-17 tells us that a great number from every nation will finally become believers during the Great Trib.
Re 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; (AV)
Re 7:13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? (AV)
Re 7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. (AV)
The second fulfillment of the gospel being preached in all the world is unfolding today in the explosion of distribution and expansion of the gospel message into very nation on earth. Nearly 97% of the world's languages have the gospel translated at present. There are tens of thousnads of missionaries around the globe, many of them from Third World countries. Multitudes are coming to Christ every day around the world. Revival is going like wildfire on several continents. Every week a thousand new churches are formed in Asia and Africa. At the present rate of growth, over 50 % of Africa will be born again by the end of the century.
In Seoul, South Korea, the world's largest church claims more than 500,000 members. Some estimate that 30% of south Korean's are followers of Christ. There are between 50-75,000 believers in China.
Consider Paul's words to Timothy:
2 Timothy 3
1. This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
America has become a victim of self-indulgence, materialism and an overwhelming blasphemy of God in music and conversation. Child abuse, runaway children, child prostitution and widespread homosexuality are plagues upon our land.
We are suffering an epidmic of ungratefullness and dishonesty. Sensuality floods the media and advertisements.
And the church has lost its first love.
Ro 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now [it is] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed. (AV)
Now is the time to get closer to God!
Now is the time to give yourself to him without reservation!
Whatever you have of this world will perish with the using, but what he has for us is eternal.
Break loose of the bonds of this world. Get free of all encumberances. Lay aside the weight…
Heb 12:1 . . . let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
