It's All About Choice

Joshua 24:15 . . . choose you this day whom ye will serve . . .

Choice is the catch-word of the day.

You can choose to have an abortion - just like you can choose to lie, steal, murder, etc. Of course, we all have a choice.

The issue today is not about choice - it's about legalizing our wrong choices so they won't seem wrong anymore. It's about easing our consciences - about relieving our guilt. When will the world realize that there is only one way to remove guilt, and that is to remove sin, and that can only be done by the sin-bearer - the sin-remover - by the one who took our sin upon himself. You only have a choice when you have power to choose.

The fact is, mankind is bound in sin. They can't help themselves. They are driven to sin. The really have no choice until they choose Jesus.

But let's talk about choice.

Motherhood or Abortion:

You can choose to abort, or you can choose to wait till you are married to have sex.

You can choose to abort, or you can choose to raise a child, share your life with that child, give yourself to that child. You see, you can take the selfish choice, or the selfless choice.

Abortion is nothing less than murder. It is taking a life. Whether that life is conscious or not is not the issue. It is a living being and to abort it is to murder it.

We all agree that King David was wrong in what he did. He committed adultery. Then, when the woman became pregnant, he committed murder to cover up his adultery. Isn't that what we do with abortion?

There are other issues that deal with a person's choice.

Marriage or Divorce:

You can choose to be true to one spouse or you can do a trade-in. You can choose to hang in there and make it work, or you can bail out and take another chance.

Divorce is a lot like gambling. You know what you have when it's in your hand, but when you throw the dice you never know what you're going to get. Somebody says, "Well, that's not very exciting!" Hey, speak for yourself! When you've been married to the same person for as long as I have, you get pretty good at this marriage thing. And don't tell me I don't know what I'm missing. You don't know what you're missing.

In fact, I do know what I'm missing, and I'm glad I'm missing it. When I think of some of the other choices I might have made, I'm just glad I made the choice I did. I know what to expect, and I know what she expects. I know what she likes and doesn't like, and she knows the same about me. That's pretty exciting to me. No surprises! Just call us 'Old Faithful', but you can leave out that 'old' part.

Gay or Straight - Homo or Hetero:

It's tough on young people today. They have choices we never had to worry much about. Used to be men were men and women were women. Now it's all kind of confusing. School kids are taught alternatives that are not really alternatives.

The Bible, nature, and common sense dictate that some things just don't work. Pigs and cows don't mate with each other. Why wold they want to? It wouldn't work. Dogs and cats don't. Birds and fish don't. Could it be that animals have more common sense than people do?

Men and men don't mate. Women and women don't mate. Neither is equipped for the other. It doesn't take a whole lot of intelligence to figure that out.

When I was a teenager, if a girl broke my heart, it never occurred to me that maybe girls weren't for me. Maybe my best friend and I should get together. I mean, hey, we could play basketball and football together. Who needed girls?

Now, hey, didn't work out with your girlfriend? Maybe you need a boyfriend. I feel sorry for the kids who are sold these lies. Read the story of the past about Sodom and Gomorrah, and you are reading the future of America.

High or Level - Intoxicated or in your right mind:

You can drink your life away and miss the whole thing, or you can stay straight and take it all in. You can take drugs and gamble on life, or you can stay straight and have a sure thing.

People use drink and drugs for various reasons. They try to run away from something; they are searching for something; they are going along with a crowd. But regardless of the reason, the result is the same - a life is wasted and all the lives around it are crippled.

Nothing good ever came from drinking or drug use. Nothing! Some may say, "Well, I got one heck of a testimony." Well, thank God you got free, but a better testimony is to get saved at an early age and stay saved. Saving a life is good, but making one whole from the beginning is better.

Heaven or Hell:

It's your choice! God says:

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

Freedom or bondage - it's your choice. You can be driven by sin, greed, vice, lust, excitement - or you can be free to choose what you respond to. Sin is the worst kind of bondage because is numbs you while you're doing it, it scars you while you're numb, then it kills you in the end. It costs much more than it's worth.

But then, it's choice isn't it. If you're not saved, you get to choose - you get to choose the weapon that you will destroy yourself with. After all, you're free. You can do what you want.

Adam had that choice. God gave every man that choice.

Joshua 24: choose you this day whom ye will serve

But before you choose, remember the words Goliath said to the Israelites:

1 Samuel 17:8 choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

What if they had chosen? Who would they have sent? What a gamble it would have been. It's a good thing God made the choice for them. He sent David. An unlikely soldier - and unlikely deliverer - an unlikely savior - but an effective one.

Today, you have a choice - Jesus or not?

What will you choose?

1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
