The Hairs Of Your Head Are Numbered
Matthew 10 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
There is a question that enters into the heart of every person at some time, probably at many times during a life. The question may take varied forms; it may be uttered, or it may be only in the mind of one who is afraid to voice it. The question may linger for years or it may be instantly answered in an unquestionable way, but you can be assured the question will return.
The question – Does God really care?
Does God care about what happens to you? Does God care if you live or die? Does God care if my car won’t start? Does He care if I lose my job? Does He care where I work? Does He care if I cheat on my homework? Does He care if Sally likes me or not? Does He care if I’m skinny or fat?
Does God even know who I am? Does He know where I work? – where I go to school? Does my life matter to Him at all?
Have you ever wondered these things? We all have! Particularly on days when nothing seems to go right. When the washer overflows and the car won’t start, the toast burned and you’re late for work – then your mother-in-law calls. You’re thinking, "Hey God, are you aware of what’s happening down here? Do you see what I’m going through? What did I do to deserve all this?"
A man was struck with an unusual occasion of thoughtfulness one day on the way home from work, and He stopped and bought his wife a beautiful bouquet of roses. We he got home, he walked in and gave his wife a big kiss, grinned and handed her the flowers. Instead of the overwhelming display of gratitude he expected, she burst into tears and said, "Oh great! Johnny got in trouble at school, Sissy fell off the swing and scrapped her knee, supper burned, and now, to top it all off, you come home drunk!"
Sometimes it seems like God went on vacation and left you with a mess.
Does God care about those times? Does He even take notice, or are you just too insignificant to even warrant his attention?
David must have been having one of those days when he wrote the 60th Psalm. In the midst of what are usually eloquently flowing praises to God, we find these words of despair.
Psalms 60 1. You have rejected us, O God, and burst forth upon us; you have been angry--now restore us! 2 You have shaken the land and torn it open; mend its fractures, for it is quaking.
3 You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger.
What a negative view! Yet, who of us has never felt the same way? We have all had times where we even felt like God was picking on us. Is it true? Does God take pleasure in seeing us suffer?
Of course not! Who among even the meanest people would take pleasure in seeing his own children suffer? Jesus revealed God as a loving father.
He says the Father knows what our needs are before we even ask.
Matthew 6 8 … for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
The Father is not willing that any should perish.
Matthew 18 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost.
The Father takes no pleasure in the punishment of the wicked.
Ezekiel 33 11 Say to them, `As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel?'
But, He tells us that bad things happen to even good people.
Matthew 5 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
I want you to know today that God knows and God cares.
Matthew 10Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
A penny! Two sparrows are worth about a penny. That’s not much worth. The smallest bird. The most insignificant creature. It’s not big enough to make much of a meal. Probably isn’t that tasty either. It’s too cheap to qualify as a decent sacrificial offering. Who takes notice of a sparrow?
God does! They may not be very important to us, but God takes notice of them. Not one of them falls to the ground but that God notices it.
If He cares so much for the sparrow, don’t you know that He’s watching you? If He notices the sparrow’s problems, He certainly notices ours. If the death of a sparrow gets the attention of the Almighty, then you know He knows about your problems. What must you be worth if a sparrow is worth so much to God?
The least valued animal is still valuable to God. And Jesus said that you are much more valuable than the sparrows.
31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
In fact, God takes such close notice of you that even the hairs of your head are numbered.
30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Do you have any idea how many hairs are on your head? I believe you would lose count or decide it wasn’t worth knowing before you ever determined how many there were. But God knows!
He takes such great notice of you that he numbers your hairs. Now somebody will ask, "Does God really take time to count our hairs?" I don’t know! The point is, He loves you so much that there is not anything about you that God is not interested in. HE knows your joys; He knows your pain; He knows your comings and goings. God knows your thoughts.
Psalms 94
11 The LORD knows the thoughts of man; he knows that they are futile.
He even knows why you think what you think.
1 Chronicles 28
9 And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you for ever.
God knows more about you than you know about yourself, and He cares more about you than you care about yourself. He knows every step you take, every thought you think, every ambition you have, and every fear - every problem - every setback.
Here is the amazing thing about God - He is intimately involved in your life. We read it in the pages of the Bible - the way God related with Abraham, Moses, David, the disciples, Paul and Silas. These are not special people. These are just people who entered into that relationship that God wants to have with every person.
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Ac 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Ro 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Re 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
Yes, God knows you, and He cares about you.
God takes care of the birds. You could take Ted Turner's and Donald Trump's millions and add them together and you still couldn't buy enough birdseed to feed all the birds in the world for one day. But God feeds them all every day.
All the medical experts in the world couldn't tell you how many hairs are in your head. There are too many variations - every head is different - there are too many different kinds of hair. You couldn't possibly count them without losing your place. Yet God knows how many hairs are on every head.
Does God care about you? Yes, He does.
Looking back at David in Psalm 60 - Read far enough in His writings and David always comes to the answer.
11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.
12 With God we shall gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.
Did God care about David? Read the record. Even when David failed God, God didn't give up on David. And He won't give up on you.
You are worth more than many sparrows. God has the hairs of your head numbered. He can take care of you.
