| Ive spent more than a decade in the wilderness, and I crave to return to the independent school life. Okay, so my life these past years hasnt been spent in the depths of a rain forest along the equator or a high mountain in the Rockies or the desert of the Southwest, but I have lived outside the walls of classrooms and the fields of athletic contests. Many years ago, a mentor told me that English teachers are a dime a dozen. When I searched for my first job in an independent school, I figured by that formula I was worth a bit less than a penny. That was undervaluation, of course. Now, between inflation and personal & professional growth, Im certainly worth a bit more. Of course, all good school men and women are versatile, able to jump in for nearly any situation to help out. Im no exception and can contribute to the life of a school in a variety of roles: -- As a leader in student and academic life as a dean of students, director of studies, school counselor, or dormitory leader; -- As a faculty member teaching English, theatre/drama, and history and the social sciences; -- As a varsity coach for lacrosse or cross country; -- As an advisor to student groups such as the newspaper, yearbook, literary journal, creative writing club, or social action groups such as Amnesty International. I seek to become an integral member of a school community; I will be a person who contributes to the life of the school and the development, education, and growth of her students. |
