Editorial Reviews
Berel
Lang, Professor of Philosophy and Humanistic Studies at Trinity
College, Hartford Conn.
Morris Eson and his collaborators have produced a wonderfully
rich edition of the Passover Haggadah filled with valuable commentary
and historical information, and appealing to readers of all backgrounds
and ages. The purpose of the Seder on Passover is to retell
the story of the Exodus and the emancipation from slavery, bringing
readers "in every generation" to feel that they themselves
were present at these events. No other edition does this
as effectively as the Eson Haggadah.
Robert
Alter, Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at
the University of California, Berkeley.
I have read the Eson commentary on the Passover Haggadah and
think very well of it. What is unusual about it
is that it is so clearly a pedagogical Haggadah. Eson
and his collaborators have devoted a lot of thought to assembling
reflections and supplementary materials that will be of use to
people attempting to engage in the study experience of the Haggadah.
Rabbi Alan D. Fuchs, Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation
Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia where he served as its Senior Rabbi
I have read thoroughly the Haggadah prepared by Morris Eson.
It is an astonishing achievement. A primary purpose fo the Seder
is to pass on to present and future generations the story of
the Exodus and information about the history of the Jewish people.
Morris Eson's Haggadah does that exceedingly well. The
breadth and depth of the material he has included is remarkable.
It will prove to be an invaluable resource to anyone leading
a Seder and will be fascinating reading to anyone participating.
Morris Eson has combined solid scholarship with a thorough knowledge
of the traditions of Passover to produce a Haggadah that should
be on the book shelf of every Jewish home and which will be a
marvelous teaching took, whether in the classroom or at the
Seder table. It is an exciting addition to the celebration of
Passover.
Myra Sklarew,
Professor of Literature at the American University in Washington,
D.C.
I have opened the beautiful Eson Haggadah and read the wonderful
commentaries, the Rabbis at B'nai Brak and the elaboration on
each of them, Jacob the geneticist, the stele and the date of
the Exodus, and so many illuminating passages. The Seder is a
teaching moment in the Jewish year and this commentary on the
Haggadah takes the teaching a ling way toward its fulfillment.
