What's It About?
Valentine is a slasher/ revenge movie set in San
Francisco where a cherub masked killer sends valentines cards to a group
of girls he knew back in Junior High. They are Paige (Denise Richards),
Lily (Jessica Cauffiel), Kate (Marley Shelton), Dorothy (Jessica Capshaw),
and Shelley (Katherine Heigl), later the group is descirbed by Dorothy.
It starts in 1988 where Jeremy Melton is asking them all to dance, Kate
being the only one to refuse politely. He asks Dorothy to dance and
she accepts. They are then caught by a group of boys while making
out.
Dorothy lies and says Jeremy attacked her.
Jeremy is stripped and beaten up by the boys. At the dance, someone
crowing round is wearing a cherub mask.
It goes to 13 years later where Shelley, after
a bad date, is sent a Valentines card signed JM and then murdered at the
morgue while practising for her exam the next day.
The group meet up at her funeral. then the
rest of the girls start to die.. They don't know who or where Jeremy Melton
is..
What was David like?
One review in a paper in Britain (That will remain
nameless until I burn the building to the ground) said that "Boreanaz is
a real gloomy gus" and that he was showing the persona that made him famous
as Angel.
Wrong. Does he even watch the show?
Ever? The difference between Adam and Angel is quite large although
they do have their similarities. Adam is a recovering alcholic (not
as depressing as you might think) and Angel's Soul is a metaphor for the
recoverin drunk as noted by David Greenwalt. However, they are still
very different.
David gave a great performance. Probably
the better one of all of them. He seemed the only one comfortable
in his role. Denise Richards was (especially at the part where they
are in the detectives office) wooden and slow at best despite the fact
she was in the role most familar with her - "the sexy one". Katherine
Heigl was good at the beginning but she's the Drew Barrymore of this film
- i.e. she dies first.
Marley Shelton (as Kate, Davids girlfriend) was
probably the best of the four remaining girls although the scene where
she's arguing with Dorothy could have been improved much. I would
maybe put the lack of fire down to bad direction. They seemed to
be reciting their lines and no more.
Overall David was looking fine (varied wardrobe!!!
Blues and greens and t-shirts. Wow I'm astonished) and the standout
performance of the movie.
Did I enjoy the movie?
Yes I did. I went to see it for two reasons
ins pite of the pathetic reviews. One is that I had been waiting
since June/July 2000 when I heard about the casting call for Valentine
and David being given the part of Adam Carr. I regularly checked
the progress and had to wait until the day after it came out in Britain,
which was Saturday 14th of April to go and see it.
The second reason was.. duh.. David Boreanaz was
it in. I was on the joy train and the idea of 96 minutes of movie
with him in it.
I had read the reviews and they weren't the best
was I determined to go and drool anyway. I wasn't really expecting
it to be any good, but it was. Several parts made me jump, the soundtrack
was good, David was great, the sets were cool. Some of the dialouge
the girls were given wasn't the best. It could have been funnier,
quicker, more original. And when Kate and Dorothy are arguing near
the end, there could have been more fire and meaning but no.
And the ending, wow that really intrigued me.
I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it so I'll shut up. Very
cliffhanger-y. Roll on Valentine 2. I think I'll have to read
the book to get the ending fully. The whole did he/didn't he thing.
So I'd give this movie a 7 and a half out of 10.
Perfect for Valentines day but I went to see it in April so it really doesn't
matter. Kinda violent though and if you want to see David in sunlight,
in a whole new colour scheme and smiling with the added scary bit, this
is the flick for you.
Or maybe I am partial to David. hmm.
