Egyptian Mau

The Egyptian Mau bears a striking resemblance to paintings of ancient Egyptian cats. Although some believe the cat really did originate in Egypt, the first documented Maus belonged to a Russian princess in the 1950s. These active, athletic cats have the spotted tabby pattern resembling wild cats, but are fully domesticated. In fact, the Mau is the only naturally-occurring spotted domestic cat. They are accepted in colors such as bronze, silver, and black smoke. They are always spotted, with large, round, evenly-spaced spots. An unusual Mau fact: Egyptian Maus are the fastest breed of domestic cat. Maus have been clocked running over 30 mph (48 kph). Maus are accepted by all major U.S. and Canadian registries.
