Chapter Three: A Fateful Encounter and Memories Lost

By: Andrea Burkeen aka Yuki-hime

************************************************************************************

Kagome had been angered by Inuyasha's question. 'Was he blind or just stupid?!' she thought to herself as she descended the hill, seeing Kaede's hut. If Inuyasha couldn't understand why she gave Kikyou a soul then did he really know her after all? The fact that he voiced the question hurt her and proved that he didn't understand her feelings or her heart at all.

Through dinner, she chatted happily with the others. Kagome and Sango had gotten onto the topic of the welfare of the village. Miroku chimed in occasionally, adding what he thought about the current situations and advice on them. Resent flooding had plagued the village, each time growing dangerously close to wiping the huts and people away. Inuyasha, with the help of Miroku, who was in charge of the planning, and the help of the villagers, started a dam and an irrigation system that diverted part of the water and enclosed the village in a moat-like fashion. ( You know, what those medieval castles had. ) It was both a security measure and allowed a much easier access to the water supply for the villagers. Everyone was happy. 'Except me.'

Her thoughts turned to Inuyasha. How he feels but she could never be sure, after all, he would go running to Kikyou. She knew what he promised Kikyou. 'Does he love me though? Really love me? If he had a choice, would he pick me?' But Kagome never voiced these thoughts to anyone. The doubt made her feel sick with herself. She watched Shippou a moment. He sat on the ground to her right, playing with a toy truck she had brought from her time. She was sure Shippou would love it. And she thought that since his foxfire was getting better, he might try to duplicate the image. This would encourage his training and he could have fun showing off the illusion to the other children and villagers. She had discovered they were very open towards her time travel uh... situation. They were eager to receive gifts from her era. Though Kagome was careful to not bring anything that would disrupt the flow of time. She had consulted her mother for hours about toys, clothes, food, anything she could think of.

Her mind flowed to thoughts of the woman across her. She had gotten along with Kikyou way better than what she thought. It was eerie though. It was almost like looking in a mirror. When Kikyou's eyes were cold, it would send chills down her spine when eye contact was made. Now, there were no chills but a warm comforting feeling that surrounded her heart. Sometimes she thought she could feel what Kikyou was feeling, but the thoughts were fleeting and she could never grasp them before they faded into a fog.

Kaede told her that she was the same person before her death and Kagome felt better knowing she had returned her sister to the old miko. She was glad that she had made the decision, even though it complicated her relationship and her future with Inuyasha. Her conversation with the miko earlier put her at an unearthly ease. The hatred, sorrow, bitterness, and evil feelings fled her heart and her soul. At least she could rest easy knowing that Kikyou could make Inuyasha happy.

Her eyes met the golden pools of Inuyasha's. She adverted them hastily. He had not said a word to her since his question. She could tell he was sullen from her remark. His responses were grunts when he was spoken to directly. Inuyasha had a lot to think about. Not only does he not know what really happened between Kikyou and Kagome, but Sesshoumaru had taken off with her for almost a month and he could tell that she was not going to tell him anything. It was awkward for him to see the two mikos sitting together in peace. It stirred emotions he had not know before. How was he suppose to chose between the two?

If he chose Kikyou, Kagome would hurt. He knew that, he wasn't stupid after all. That was his last intention. If he chose Kagome, how would Kikyou feel? After all that had happened between them and Naraku, he felt that now she was human again he couldn't abandon her after it was over. After Naraku had died. After he avenged her death.

She became the woman he remembered after she received a soul from Kagome. There was an amazing transformation. How could he abandon her now? How could he abandon Kagome? She had risked her life for him several times. Saving him from what he realized now, to be a horrible future. Inuyasha was between a rock and a hard place. No choice seemed to be the right one. But he also knew that if he didn't make a decision, it would be made for him. And he could lose either or both.

He was startled out of his thoughts by Kagome's words. "I wanted everyone to know that I'm going to be leaving in the morning." She made sure to avoid his eyes, he noticed.

"What? Kagome child, where are ye going?" Kaede asked.

"I'm not really sure. I thought about heading south, but I have no real destination in mind. I'll enjoy the time alone, so don't worry so much Kaede-sama." She smiled to reassure her friends that this would make her happy. 'I'll get to clear my head of Inuyasha and think about what I will do after I get over him,' she added silently.

Shippou was a little hurt and wanted to tag along, but she assured him it was okay, and that Sango and Miroku would protect him. There was still Inuyasha too. "Besides, after we killed Naraku, I think I can handle anything."

The conversation turned to lighter tones as Kaede spoke of the spring festival coming up in a couple of months. Kagome promised to come by and celebrate the new season. Everyone was excited about what "games", as Kagome put it, they were going to play. They sat by the fire, enjoying the warmth and flickering lights. Conversation turned to comments about the sounds in the nearby forest or someone saw a shooting star. And soon, the group decided to turn in for the night.

In the past month, Miroku had built a small hut, with the help of Inuyasha's wood cutting skills, which sat beside Kaede's. It served as an extra sleeping area for the men, mainly himself and Inuyasha, so the women could have privacy. It also served as an extra storing area for Kaede's herbs and vegetables ( the irrigation system let there be more gardens = more vegetables = feed more people = village grows = get it? x.x ) during the growing seasons. The villagers were looking forward to winter this year because there would not be a lack of food. ( Yay for our heroes! )

Sango spoke of Miroku's 'habits' had decreased greatly since the absence of the Wind Tunnel in his hand. Kagome was a little surprised but coughed it up to the lack of him being sucked in by it, like his father and grandfather before him. Kagome was happy for her friends. They all seemed to be happy or at least were going to be. She sensed that Miroku was going to propose to Sango, since they were obviously getting along a lot better than she and Inuyasha were.

Kagome couldn't get her mind off the hanyou. She laid awake all night thinking about her current situation. Shortly before dawn, she rose quietly, so as to not wake the others. Since her time at Sesshoumaru's castle, she had become accustomed to waking and beginning the training routine. She found it to be essential to her state of mind. The routine helped her clear her mind. It was a healthy habit for her. She was able to let the tension seeped out of her body.

She was relieved when she stepped out into the fresh early morning air. The taijiya outfit hugged her form as she walked over the bridge and into the edge of the forest. Her movements stirred Inuyasha from his light slumber. He followed from the tops of the trees, watching her, curious as to why she was up this early.

Kagome stretched the muscles in her arms and legs briefly, working out the sleep and knots. She stood still for a few minutes, silently mediating, clearing her mind. She let out a breath, exhaling slowly and drew the two swords, a long blade and short, on her right hip. The sting of the metal leaving the sheath echoed off the surrounding trees. Inuyasha's ears perked up. His eyes narrowing, focusing in on his subject.

He watched her fluid movements. He had never really seen her when they were battling Naraku, his attention was on the half-demon and he was never allowed to watch her train with Sesshoumaru. That didn't sit well with him but the others had convinced the hanyou that it was for the best. He had to agree too. Kagome had been exceptional during the defeat. She had helped more than Inuyasha thought.

She was swinging the blades, cutting the whistling air. Suddenly the swords were glowing a soft white-pink aura and she shot two waves of power, cutting down several trees in their path. "Oops," her soft exclamation came. He was only able to hear it because of his demon ears. "Dammit, how am I going to explain this? I guess training with Sesshoumaru isn't the same as with a tree." She sighed, sheathing the two weapons. The glowing dissipated through the sheath into her body, which slightly glowed.

"On to the physical," she said as she leaned to touch the ground with the left fingers, her right leg stretched behind. She squatted a few times and then spurted off. Inuyasha watched her use the momentum to bounce upward off two trees. She landed elegantly on a branch slightly below him, perched like a snake ready to strike. He held his breathe. Her pose and balance was perfect. He had never know this Kagome, and somehow, he felt the pain of hurt and jealously in his heart for his demon half-brother's experience with her.

She stood and jumped to the nearest branch in front of her. Swinging herself up, she landed on the third limb above Inuyasha. He slipped around the tree to conceal himself. The movement was lost to Kagome though, as she jumped higher until she reached the sky above. The open, unpolluted air was cool in her lungs, and she breathed deeply, enjoying the taste of nature. The Feudal Era did have it perks. 'No stupid humans polluting the air,' she thought.

She sat there until the sun rose, letting the warm rays of the light from heaven shine upon her. She would be okay. She would survive. She just hoped she would be happy. After lunch, Kagome set off. She said her goodbyes to everyone, including Kikyou, with the exception of one missing hanyou that they had yet to see that morning. She had decided to head east and explore the people and villages more, especially Edo, the future capital of the Japan in her era. It wasn't that far away from where she was now. Then she decided to visit Kyoto, the capital of Japan now, since the others wanted her to join them in the spring festival activities.

************************************************************************************

Inuyasha could not watch Kagome leave. After seeing her training before dawn, he couldn't bring himself to see the woman as the same. She had always needed him, and vice versa. Yeah, so he always told her that it was only because of her power to detect and see the Shikon no Tama, but that was a lie. Well, half of it. He needed her more than he thought and it took him to see that she could defend herself without him to make him realize that. But how was he suppose to know what she felt? He recalled what she had said the day before. "Inuyasha, if you don't know, then I guess you never will."

He sighed. 'Women are too complicated. If I don't know why Kagome brought Kikyou back? Hmmm..... Why would Kagome bring her back? What does she have to lose?' He thought for a while, nothing really solid hit him. 'Kagome would have been better off if Kikyou had died, but then I guess I would have had to go to hell with her.' He paused. Was that it? Did Kagome want him to go on living? It made sense, but there are other ways to solve that. Naraku was dead and he avenged Kikyou's death, so why would he follow her to hell?

Surely Kagome realized this. He had told her, not in words but actions that he would always be there for her. What more did she need? 'Maybe she brought Kikyou back so she could run off with Sesshoumaru.' The sudden thought stilled the hanyou, then he shook his head. 'No, Kagome would never hurt me like that.'

"Inuyasha!" The female's voice carried through the trees and to his ears. He turned to see Kikyou coming into sight from the underbrush. "Inuyasha!" He floated to earth as Kikyou saw his red fire-rat's cloth in the distance. "Inuyasha! Kagome has already left. Did you not want to say anything to her?" she asked as he walked past her.

She received a grunt as his response. "Inuyasha, didn't you even want to say goodbye to Kagome?" Another grunt followed. She turned to walked the path behind him. "Inuyasha, are you just going to let her walk away without a single word?"

"What the hell do you want me to do?! Huh?! What she wants, I can't do right now. I can't pick between you and Kagome." He yelled his fury and stomped off. Kikyou was left alone in the forest to stare after him.

************************************************************************************

Sesshoumaru waited patiently for the demon to return. He needed to know if she was okay. Kagome had refused to let him come with her. He was not happy with the decision and had a lower demon from the servant staff follow her, secretly. He wanted to make sure she was safe, and that there would be no harm come to her. Especially from Kikyou. His eyes grew darker when he thought of what had happened.

"Lord," the servant appear behind the demon, who had been looking out to the horizon. "The Lady is safe and traveling east to Edo. She left Inuyasha's village six days ago. I followed her until she reached the end of Inuyasha's borders, then returned."

'Hmmm..... so she's heading to Edo. I wonder why,' he thought. "Thank you, Naes. I have another mission for you. I want you to follow and befriend her. She has never met you so you will be fine. Just make sure nothing happens to her. Do not report back to me. I want you to bring her here. Eventually."

"Yes my lord," she replied as she bowed and left the room. This time, he wasn't taking any chances. Although the most dangerous being had been destroyed ( Naraku ), there was still a lot to worry about. Like Inuyasha. Sesshoumaru was wary of his younger half-brother. He knew that if Inuyasha wished, he could have Kagome, she was in love with him, after all.

************************************************************************************

The female demon slipped through the branches with ease. It had been three days since she left the Western castle, she estimated that Kagome was four to six days ahead of her, but the distance was not a problem. Naes could reach the miko in three days flat, regardless of how far ahead she was. After all, she was a demon.

Her clothing was a plain gray kimono with a blood red obi, the color of her lips. The under wrap was white and matched her skin. Her jet charcoal hair was in perfect contrast to her 'image'. She looked like Death. If Death was a woman. When the air floated through her hair, as she jumped above the tree line to gain more distance, elf-like ears could be seen. She was a very unique demon indeed. A rarity in the current era.

Sesshoumaru had sent her because she was the next best thing. If he couldn't be there, she was quite capable of fending off any predator. She caught the faint scent of Kagome's blood carried by the wind from the north. Naes changed her direction. Why would Kagome change her course? Had she ran into trouble that forced her off her path or did she voluntarily leave?

'Dammit! I've got to hurry,' her thoughts turned to concentrating on finding the miko. She bounded effortlessly over hills, her eyes searching the ground below for a hint of any trouble. The smell was becoming stronger, but now it was mixed heavily with human blood.

The next hill over told Naes why Kagome had left the path. Even a miko would be able to sense the death that resided over this village. Dead bodies littered the grass and dirt, blood soaking into the earth. Men, women, children and the elderly. None were spared in the blood-bath that had ensued. Who would do this damage? Maybe there was a clan of lower demons in the area.

A light to the west caught her attention. 'Kagome's purity arrow!' The shaft obviously missing the target. 'Odd,' she thought, 'Kagome must be hurt worse than I assumed.' The quick recognition that she could have been heading toward the castle reminded her of Sesshoumaru's final order.

Mid-air, she brought her concealed right hand out to reveal long fingernails. The light glistened off the razor sharp weapons. She was silent as she swooped down on two demons, killing them with a single swing of her arm. The miko noticed her before the strike and gave a silent thank you to whoever was on her side today. She was relieved when someone showed up. There were just too many demons to fight off. Kagome never expected them to be this organized, or this smart.

She couldn't give the intruder a second glance as a new demon came roaring at her through the underbrush. She moved with ease to avoid the blow of his flailing weapon toward her long blade. It had been knocked from her hands when five demons of various sizes attacked her at the same time. She had killed two, a small slithering skeleton with a human head and a spider-esk moving mass that, Kagome found, emitted a poisonous gas of miasma. The third beast was much larger with an ogre-like look, feel and smell. Especially after the blood was let loose from his veins.

The problem had laid with the other two. The praying-mantis-like creature that had the body of dragon-lizard, had sliced her right arm, while the other demon, who appeared as a small ghostly figure, knocked her down and ran a blade through her left shoulder. At that time, she realized she was indeed in trouble. 'Damn, miasma!' The gas had been more toxic than she would have thought but with the help of her new-found ally, she had been able to move away to a safe distance.

With the demons slain, Kagome turned her full attention to the new arrival. She slowly picked herself off the ground, the two wounds were dripping blood and had left pools underneath her and in her wake. "Thank you stranger. I appreciate the help you ha...." Kagome collapsed from the loss of blood and the toxic miasma gas. Naes rushed to the woman's side.

************************************************************************************

He wanted to forget the past and he had actually moved on from those painful memories. Kikyou was nothing but a ghost to him now. Yet he had shown no sign that his feelings had changed, said nothing to ward Kikyou's presence away, and nothing to calm the chaos that turned inside the heart of his love. 'Dammit, why had Kagome felt the need to give Kikyou a soul. It only complicated the situation. How am I going to leave Kikyou alone? What will she say?'

The thoughts were racing franticly in his mind. Would Kikyou mind? Did the feelings that they shared fifty-four years ago still exist? Inuyasha felt like he needed to know how Kikyou felt before he could even move on. Would she be okay without him? He decided then to get to know this new Kikyou better and maybe even develop a friendship to replace the burnt bridges of the puppy love they shared ( no pun intended ). It was true, just like Kagome had said six months ago.

* F LA S H B A C K *

Kagome was obviously mad at him, though he never heard the 'sit' that he expected. He cringed when he thought that she had seen him with Kikyou. The miko had appeared out of nowhere, as usual, and her faint scent sent him to check the surrounding area. Kagome had followed him and saw the actions exchanged between the star-crossed lovers.

At least, that's how Kagome saw them, but her views had changed recently. After Inuyasha's half-brother, Sesshoumaru, had joined the team, Kagome began to feel very embarrassed about Inuyasha's brashness with the appearance of the clay woman. Sesshoumaru had never really known the private relations with Inuyasha, Kikyou and herself. She feel weird that an outsider was viewing how Inuyasha publicly disgraced her, she understood this because Sango had explained how this would be seen to demons. That Inuyasha was abandoning her when he left her alone to run off, especially with or to another woman. There were strange feelings that she received from him but she couldn't tell Inuyasha that. They needed his help and she was probably just imaging it anyway.

With these aggravations, Kagome snapped on him afterwards. Though she saw what had transpired in the first few moments, she fled before witnessing the truth to the situation. After Inuyasha returned, he found her severely pissed and she confronted him about his secret meeting.

The only witnesses to this uncomfortable situation were Sango and Miroku, who were only there to keep the argument under control.

"It's none of your business what I do with Kikyou!" he yelled with growls emerging every few words.

"But what about me?! Don't you care?!" Tears sprung to her blue eyes.

"What the fuck are you talking about?! Of course I care about you!" The eyes of the hanyou flashed deep golden simmers that reflected the anger within him.

"Why do you even care if Kouga and I marry? You run off with Kikyou and expect me to just sit and wait!" Her eyes were on fire. "Inuyasha you are so stupid! If the two of you were really in love, then why was Naraku able to trick you two so easily?!"

Her words shook him. He stuttered to find something to protest the truth that was spoken. She slapped a hand over her mouth. Sango and Miroku held their breath. Kagome had not meant to speak those deep emotions and thoughts that were buried in her heart.

* E N D    F LA S H B A C K *

That was only spoken four months before Naraku's defeat. Back then, he wondered how he was ever going to tell Kagome the true conversation that he had with Kikyou on that day. But now, he wished that he had, then she would have realized the true Inuyasha, and he would be saved from the current predicament. 'You can't blame anyone but yourself.'

He set out toward the village. In his flight from Kikyou earlier, he ended up on the out skirts of his forest. Inuyasha hoped that he could talk to Kikyou and then maybe he could somehow patch things up.

************************************************************************************

Sango and Miroku were sitting outside Kaede's hut as Kikyou approached. She was alone so they surmised that she was unable to persuade Inuyasha back. Only Kagome could quell his anger. "No luck." The monk's voice sounded in Sango's left ear. She quickly changed gears to focus on the current problem. As always, it was Inuyasha's stupid male behaviors that made everyone's life difficult.

"I'm sorry but Inuyasha just ran off into the forest. I don't see how Kagome did it." Her shoulders

slumped.

Sango smiled inward. Not even Inuyasha was the same without Kagome around. "It's okay Kikyou. Inuyasha is hard to deal with. Don't let it bother you." She stood, silently breaking the conversation that she and Miroku were engaged in. "Come, let's see what the villagers are doing."

Miroku watched Kikyou and Sango walk into the distance. He stood and stretched. He might as well get some exercise. It wasn't healthy to be lazy. He started across the bridge and wandered until he found himself in front of the Well of Time. Miroku found it strange that he should end up here but thought that there had to be a reason. He began to closely inspect the grass around the well when it caught his attention. It seemed to be a much brighter green, more vibrant, and there was an unearthly glow.

Curiosity took over and soon he found himself down the well. The brown earth held the same qualities as the grass above. He suspected that it had to do with Kagome and her link to her time. "Could there still be a possibility that Kagome will be able to return to her era?"

The sounds of rustling drew his attention and he quickly returned to the ground above. There had not been any other demons in the area because of Inuyasha's permanent residence in the village. And they had defeated Naraku, so Miroku was not in distress but worry did cross his features. The sounds were faint and surrounded him.

************************************************************************************

Naes had been able to find a safe hideout in a nearby cave, some fifty miles west of the site where the battle was held. She wanted to be sure that the scent of Kagome's blood did not draw any other demons that may have been associated with the ones dead. Once the cave and surrounding area was safe, she searched for bedding materials and quickly hunted down herbs and food to have when the woman woke.

When she returned to the cave, the blood from the miko had soaked into the ground around her. Naes hung the food, so as to not get it covered with the dirt, and placed the herbs in a small bowl that was quickly fashioned out of twigs and leaves. There was a small fire going with boiling water and cloth sterilizing. She spread the hay out in the farthest corner and then undressed and cleaned Kagome.

With the lack of clothing, Naes could see the real damage that the two wounds had done. Strategically placed and with the added miasma gas wound have killed anyone else, but she was much more strong-willed than one could imagine a human being. She retrieved the herbal medicine and bandages and began to tend to the woman. The medicine was carefully placed over the wounds with the cloth from the hot water to help the body soak the ointment.

The one thing that worried Naes was that the toxic gas had soaked into her system and that it would rely upon Kagome to ultimately save herself. At least the medicine would help ease the pain. Once her current task was done, she set out to clean the bloody clothes and the animal carcass she had hunted earlier.

That evening, when she checked Kagome's wounds, the bleeding had soaked through the bandages and she went about removing them and redressing her. The woman slept through the night and the next day. Naes continually checked her afterwards, keeping the wounds clean, as well as the surrounding area, but only when she felt that it was safe to leave her ward for a short period of time.

Kagome woke mid-morning on the fourth day since the attack. Her eyes focused on the figure by the fire and when she moved slightly, it caught the other's attention. The black haired female brought over a cool bottle of water and lifting up Kagome's head, she let the woman drink her fill.

The water was cold on her parched lips and throat, but when she tried to speak, she found that there was no voice. "Do not worry. I will not bring harm to you. My name is Naes. I am an ally." She sat beside her. "You are awake so soon, especially after the maisma soaked into your blood stream."

Kagome thought about when Sesshoumaru had given her a little blood* and contributed it to his blood's defensive mechanisms. "Soon you will be up and moving again. I have some food if you would like to eat." At the woman's nod, she fetched the hanging rabbit. The first animal that she caught was a boar and that lasted Naes two days, though she never needed to eat.

The demon placed the dead rabbit over the fire and it slowly cooked. Kagome watched with slight anticipation the movements of the other. She had made no threatening actions and if her intent was to kill, then why would the woman want to save her life? She was a little confused but thought that there might be other demons out there that were like Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru. Well, maybe similar and friendlier. A lot friendlier. Demons who wanted to help people. She always thought that one of the reasons Inuyasha helped humans was because he was partly human and because of his relationship with Kikyou.

The woman's voice broke Kagome out of her thoughts. "The villagers were massacred by those lowly demons but there had to be a higher power behind this. Demons that don't have a lot power don't group together like that because of feuding between them. They become too greedy and bloodthirsty." Naes turned to look at her. Their eyes met and she spoke again. "What do you think?"

Kagome knew that the question was rhetorical but it did make her wonder. There were demons of all types and she did have a difficult time. Who could possibly be behind this? Naraku flashed in her mind's eye but she banished the thought. After all, he was dead. But could there be others that might have the power to control lowly demons? 'What a stupid question! Of course there would be others. Take Sesshoumaru for example.' She shuddered at the memory of his cold glare. 'That's not even the worst.' She smiled inwardly. But the thought still remained.

"It's very curious how you were lead off the rode and into a blood bath. I wonder if it was meant for you, Kagome-sama." The woman smiled, the red eyes glowing. "I know who you are because of your traveling with the band that defeated and killed the half-demon Naraku. The famous reincarnated priestess from another time, more powerful than any human since the great Miko Midoriko. Why even great demons fear you because of your success in battle. Naraku was very powerful. He controlled some powerful full demons."

'Who would want to target me? Is it because of the Shikon no Tama?' Kagome's thoughts flickered to the previous encounter she had experienced in her journey. She decided then to leave Inuyasha and the gang out of whatever was after her. If it didn't involve the others then she didn't want them to get hurt. At this moment, Kagome vowed to try to leave her memories of Inuyasha and her companies locked away in her mind.

She would lose her memories and begin a new. Inuyasha had chosen Kikyou and Kagome was no longer going to watch their romance blossom. Her heart couldn't stand it any more.

************************************************************************************

The monk had been caught off-guard. The lowly demons managed to land a few scratches on the man before he destroyed them. Relief flooded his body, but was flushed away by the rush of demons emerging from the surrounding depths of the forest.

"Miroku!" Sango's voiced filled his ears. He looked to the sky and saw the woman on Kirara. Her Hiraikotsu swept down, slicing several dozens of the demons.

"They are everywhere!" Miroku shouted as he climbed on the demon's back, behind the youkai taijiya. The trio bounced off the ground. "Yes, I know. They were at the village."

************************************************************************************

This is a pronunciation list for some of the character names that I have come up with. I like my spellings so leave me alone about them.

Naes - ness - one of Sesshoumaru's servants that follows and befriends Kagome.

blood* - this is a reference to an event that happened before the attack. I will explain later.

Hiraikotsu - Flying Bone - a huge boomerang - this is Sango's famous weapon!

youkai taijiya - demon exterminator - this is Sango's 'occupation', what other people and villagers refer to her as.
