Plato's Cave
No light down here,
Dank, musty, cold,
I see them working,
Clawing the mold,
They're digging for hope,
They're ignoring their hurts,
They dig to escape,
Their breath comes in spurts.

Down they go,
Downeverdown,
Digging holes in holes in holes.

Down they dig,
Downeverdown,
Coal diggers digging where there is no coal.

I watch them dazed,
Were they so blind,
To ignore the light,
That showed behind,
The breeze that whispered,
From way up there,
Of better things,
Outside the lair?

Down they go,
Downeverdown,
Blocked by stone, yet start again,

Down they dig,
Downeverdown,
Digging, digging, dig without end.

There is no master,
That I can witness,
Yet fear still shines,
Eyes glint with madness.
Why were they turning,
Why would they shy,
From open air,
From open sky?

Yet down they go,
Downeverdown,
Fleeing from the source of light and warmth,

Down they still dig,
Downeverdown,
Never once venturing forth.
