Podengo Colours
I would like to present you my opinion on the colours of the Portuguese Podengos. I breed wirehaired medium Podengos jointly with my son, Nuno Passadinhas, with the affix of Veiros. I am Judge, member of the Commission of Portuguese Races of the Portuguese Kennel Club and member of the Board of the Club of the Portuguese Podengo.
Concerning the colours, the standard of Portuguese Podengos is not perfectly clear, saying: "the predominant colours are...." mentioning some colours. In this form, allows that for some people all the colours will be admitted, with predominance of that mentioned in the standard, while that for other people the only admitted colours are the ones mentioned in the standard.
This situation has placed judges and breeders in disagreement, being urgent the alteration of the standard so it can be read by everyone in the same way.
In my opinion only the colours mentioned in the standard should be admitted, for the following reasons:
1. Considering the innumerable contacts that I had with the author of the standard, I believe that it was his opinion.
2. This is also the interpretation of many judges.
3. Because a few ago days I judging 200 Portuguese Podengos of hunting packs and all of them were yellow or had yellow marks;
4. And also because all the family of foreign Podengos (Cirneco, Pharaoh hound, Ibicenco, etc.) I only know them in these colours.
It would like to remember, that the colours in the standard of Podengo Portuguese are exactly the same for the three sizes and varieties.
I also consider that, in case that has some alteration of the standard, this will have to restrict for the colours allowed for the yellow in its varieties of clear and dark and yellow marked.
This confusion about the standard, leads us to attend judgment of dogs that remind me Cairn Terriers, and I think that doesn?t benefits the breed, deviating us of the vast family of Podengos, the one that we belong.
As breeders we keep breeding the colours that we defend, that are also the ones that we find spread along the country in the dogs created by the anonymous people that through the years kept alive this race, our beautiful Portuguese Podengos
On this substance, this is my personal opinion with no personal taste or convenience.
