Widows pensions started about 1835 with the American Revolutionary War Widow's Pensions. After the Civil War, the Federal government offered pensions to soldiers of the Union Army. Confederates were not elibible. In Tennessee, the state government first offered pensions in 1891.
Contents of pension files should include: full dates for widow and soldier's birth, marriage, and soldier's death; names and ages of children at the time of application; statements from other veteran's who knew the soldier; copies of marriage certificates; regiment and company and other items.
