23rd February - Austrian Studies

I came across the workbook i used at the language camp, and i have a list of stuff from former exchange students. Most of them are hints and tips, but some of them are observations about things particular to Austria (well not really, but done here at least). I thought everyone might like to hear them. I have a more comprehensive list of stuff that i will put up after my birthday, but for now, have a look at these:

- No feet on tables or chairs, exceedingly rude
- No hats indoor, this one seems simple, but is SERIOUSLY    enforced over  here!
- No swinging back on chairs, funnily enough my host dad actually repremanded my host sisters boyfriend on this one!
- Use the toilet brush. This one needs a little explaination. The toilets here have an interesting shape. In short, there is a shelf before the bottom starts. The toilet brush is more useful here...
- Remove shoes in the house. Everywhere. It is also very polite to offer to do this before the host does
- Doors are always kept closed. This is mainly due to heating.
- Turn off all lights, it is rude to leave an unused light on.
- Must recycle.....EVERYTHING!
-
Always have your hands visible when eating at the table. I didn't really think much of this one, then started looking at everyone during meal time, and, surely enough, everyone keeps both their hands on the table and visible at all times. Strangely, however, it is completely normal to have your elbows on the table and sit hunched over.
- 'A little walk' means at least 3 hours. No joke, and for a 'longer walk' bring a sleeping bag
- Dont use the toilets on trains whilst they are stopped at a station. I didnt understand this one until i saw a lovely display of liquid waste management at a train station....
- You must pay if you use a public toilet (about 0.30)
- At dinner at a restaurant, a bowl of rolls is brought out, these have to be paid for as well, and only at the classiest restuarants do you get butter
- It is very rude to call after 9 pm or before 8 am (pretty similar)
- Dont put your feet on the seats of trains or buses without taking off your shoes, there are people who patrol  looking just for that, and it is a 70 fine!

Just a short one today, but ill write some about my birthday tomoz!
