22nd March - Back Home  part ii

The reason im bringing all this up is because in thinking about all the things in my life whilst over here, this is one thing that cannot be avoided. Especially with the recent attacks in Madrid. But im just a person who believes that, whether it be my Catholic schooling or whatever, an eye for an eye is a policy that solves nothing and merely sets in sequence a series of events that after time, can hardly be stopped. One significant example of this, i feel, is in Israel, or more specifically, in Palestine. This is a problem that needs compromise from both sides. Not to trivialise the situaiton, but it cannot be solved by the circular killing that currently occurs. What isnt being seen is that hate breeds hate.

This is one thing that came up in talking to Konnie and Sean. As we all agreed, the Palestinian people have their backs against the wall and have nothing to lose. Its is situations such as this - poverty, destruction, and hate that breed terrorism. And although it is an exponentially bigger problem, i feel that the only solution to this global problem is to mend this situation first. I know im simplifying and incredible problem, but maybe that is the best way to look at it. I mean, to illustrate my point, if a child grows up being taught to hate  and with a gun in his hand, then why should he know any different?

Im not really sure. It is such a big problem, and as i said, it is one of the things that i have been thinking about greatly whilst over here. It came up in this discussion, and it was really interesting to hear different points of view on the situation. I mean, Sean and Konrad had no problem with what i called the world policing that the American Military does. As they said to me: 'if they didnt do it then who would?'. But whilst i completely comprehend that point i dont like the hypocrisy of the Americans searching for the now catch phrase: Weapons of Mass Destruction, whilst back at home lies the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons in the world. And whilst i understand that a tryrant and horrible dictator such as Saddam Hussein must be gotten rid of, the condescending way in which, at least i feel, the United States rolls in the tanks and takes control. It is a two edged sword, i appreciate what has happened for the sake of the Iraqi people, but dont like the way it has been done, but at the same time, and to add a third edge (!?!), i  understand there is very few other ways of bringing down a person such as this. I know, my arguements rarely make sense and often leave me more confused than when i started!

But just a note of warning before i finish; anyone that has read my last three entries would think that im a real anti-American and all. But this is really not true at all, i suppose im just thinking through things on paper that i should be really thinking in my head. As ive always said, and mentioned before, this year is about thining about these things, and getting to know who i am and the way i think. I suppose this is just another things im thinking about, in both a negative and positive way. Yes, there i go again, finishing on a juxtaposition, which ive come to think is the foundation for all my argument! I just like to see both sides of a situation.
