| 17th July - In the Mountains The area in and around St Moritz is very exclusive and a haven for wellness resorts, spas and things of the like. It is also a mecca for walkers and mountainbike riders. During the winter it is home to some of the best skiing in the world, but during the summer that naturally goes and people walk the slopes for hours on end. This morning that is exactly what we did. We caught a skilift to the top station and after a little while hanging around up there, checking out the snow that was left there (as there is a glacier on the top and people still ski in summer there), and taking a few photos, we left on our Wanderung down to the bottom. It was an incredible journey. The country had an incredible way of changing within 50m or so. One type of vegetation tranforms to another and you feel as though you are in a different country. The clouds linger on slightly above and bear down cheerfully on the walkers. We past thousand of bubbling streams and ponds and walked through mainly heavily rocky areas, it was so awesome. At times, the landscape looked so alive and teeming with things in the grass and flowers, and then at others, it seemed so barren, the vast abundance of rocks hinting to the highlands of Scotland. It was a fantastic walk, although it got a little windy. We were out for about 5 hours, and we had a great day. That night i cooked a really nice mushroom risotto, with fresh porcini mushrooms picked in the mountains. Switzerland is famous for its mushrooms, one reason being that it is wide enough away that it wasnt affected by Chernoble, the mushrooms in eastern europe, and austria as well, still pick up radiation in the soil. The next day we went for a shorter walk to a local town about an hour from Sils. It was a beautiful walk by the lake, although at times, got a little strenuous. We had a picnic at the end, and we bought some fresh sheeps cheese at the local farm which was out of this world good! The next day Michi and I went into St Moritz for lunch with some business friends of hers, it was cool. We went to an italian restaurant. I forget we were in Switzerland, where they DO speak Italian, so everything at the Italian restaurant is in Italian, i love it! It was a superb meal though. That night we took the boys and went to a local restaurant for fondue, that was seriously cool! Its not like the cheese fondue you naturally think of, it is boiling oil, which you dunk chunks of meet, vegies, anything you want into, with thousands of sauces and things on the side, it rocked! We ordered for 4, even though we were 5 (me, Michi, the two boys, and their friend Karl Maria) and ate for 6! It was so good though, we had flaming icecream after, with Grand Manier, and that was seriously good! Youd struggle to beat that meal! Paz |
