Part III: THOMAS F. PARTIN

By

SheRita Kae Partin

Thomas F. Partin, son of Elizabeth King and William Partin, was born 24 September 1822 probably in Coffee County or Grundy County, Tennessee.   He died 2 July 1885 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and was buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

According to affidavits found among Thomas F. Partin's military application for pension and Nacogdoches County Voters Registration he came to Nacogdoches County, Texas from Tennessee around 1851 with his brothers and sister.  Which seems likely since he nor his family are listed in the 1850 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas

Thomas served in the Confederate States Army as 3rd. Corporal in Co. B., 3rd Brigade of the Texas State Troops where he enlisted in 1862 and served for the duration of the war.

It is believe that Thomas married about 1840 possibly in Tennessee or Mississippi; there is not a certificate located in Nacogdoches or Cooke County, Texas at this time.

He married Miss Nancy Marlessie Cornelison.  She was the daughter of Mary O. “Polly” Roberts and Jesse O. Cornelison.  Nancy was affectionately called "Aunt Nancy" or "Grandma" by all those who knew her.

Information that Nancy gave in the Census records of Nacogdoches County, Texas stated that her parents were both born in North Carolina.

Thomas and Nancy Partin are found listed in the 1860 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas with four sons and two daughters as can be seen below.

1860 Census of Nacogdoches Co., Texas

In the 1870 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas Thomas and Nancy Partin are living in Nacogdoches County, Texas with only their four sons.  Their two daughters Sephrona and Adelide are not listed and are believed to have died prior to the taking of the 1870 Census.  Both girls are probably buried in the family plot in Fairview Cemetery, unmarked.  There is ample space between the graves of their Father Thomas Partin and the graves of William Anderson (listed as T.A. on his tombstone) Partin for the grave of his wife Nancy who is know to have been buried beside him, and those of his two daughters.

1870 Census of Nacogdoches Co., Texas 338-338

In the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas Thomas and Nancy have only one son left at home and are living next door to their son William Anderson Partin and his wife Caledonia "Callie" E. A. Cornelison Partin and their new baby daughter Oriter "Artie" Partin.

Nancy filed two Pension Applications; the first one was rejected but she did finally receive Pension Application #13875 on Thomas F. Partin.

Aunt Nancy was born 10 August 1823 in Burrows Cove, Grundy Co., Tennessee.  In the 1900 Census Nancy gaves her date of birth as August, 1822 in  Tennessee.  She died 7 March 1909 in Nacogdoches, Texas at the home of Bob Holt in "South Heights".

The location of South Heights in the city is not known; nor has the relationship of Mr. Bob Holt to Nancy Partin been established.  She was buried beside her husband in Fairview Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas, her grave is unmarked.

Cason & Monk Funeral Home records show Nancy Partin's death as 4 March 1909 which is incorrect.

III.-1.  WILLIAM ANDERSON PARTIN

William Anderson Partin, or "Anderson" as he was called all his live, was the son of Nancy Marlessie Cornelison and Thomas F. (Franklin?) Partin.  He was born ____ October 1844 in Burrows Cove, Tennessee.  The exact date is not known but he listed his birth date in the 1900 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas as October of 1844 in Tennessee.

His marriage is recorded in the records of both Nacogdoches County, Texas and in Cooke County, Texas where it is believed the family of Nancy and Thomas Partin lived for a short while.  Anderson married on the 22 January 1877 in Nacogdoches County\Cooke County, Texas to Miss Caledonia E. A. "Callie" Cornelison.  She was the adopted daughter of Mary O. Cornelison, daughter of Mary O. “Polly” Roberts and Jesse E. Cornelsison.

Callie was born ____ March, 1854 in Missouri according the information she gave in the 1900 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  In this same Census she stated that both her parents were born in Germany.  (this author takes this to mean her natural parents).  She died  27 April 1904 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery east of Nacogdoches, Texas.  There is a death Certificate on file for her in Nacogdoches County.  Cason & Monk Funeral Home Records of 1904, now in the possession of Cason Monk & Metcalf Funeral Home in Nacogdoches, Texas, also established that Callie Partin died April 27, 1904.  The records kept prior to the 1920's did not give as much information as the later records but her cause and death of death can be established.

It is believed by this writer that William Anderson Partin may have been married prior to his marriage to Caledonia E. A. "Callie" Cornelison; and, there are possibly one or two other children.

In both the 1860 and 1870 Census's of Nacogdoches County, Texas he is listed as just William Partin and is living at home with his parents, brother and sisters.

In the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas William Anderson Partin is married but is living next door to his parents East of the town of Nacogdoches in the Melrose Community.

William "Anderson" Partin died 17 July 1902 "at the home of his daughter in Angelina County, Texas".  He was buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas in the Family Plot marked by a homemade cement marker as is his wife's.  His marker mistakenly reads "T. A. Partin" and hers reads "Callie Partin".  These stones were made by Anderson's grand-daughter Mrs. Annie Beth Partin Jessup of San Augustine, Texas, who confused the name of Anderson's father, Thomas F. Partin, with that of her Grand-Father William Anderson Partin.  For most of her life Annie Beth believed his name was Thomas Anderson

Partin instead of William Anderson Partin.

The obituary for William Anderson Partin stirs another mystery when it mentions that he died "at the home of his daughter in Angelina County, Texas".  His only known daughter was Oriter "Artie" Partin who married Dr. John Kendrick Castleberry just two years prior to William Anderson's death.

Oriter is not known to have ever lived in Angelina County which gives the possibility of a daughter who may have been born and married between 1980 and 1900 that was never listed in the Census Records.  This is a  span of time in which the 1890 Census which was destroyed and not available to check; leaving the possibility for another daughter to have been born and also grown and married before the 1900 Census was taken.  There are numerous possibilities.

William Anderson Partin's Obituary in the Nacogdoches paper The Daily Sentinel read as follows:

Nacogdoches Sentinel July 11, 1902 Obituary

Anderson Partin Dead

Anderson Partin, who lived two miles east from Nacogdoches, died yesterday at the home of his daughter in Angelina County.  He had been in bad health several years and his death was caused from an attack of neuralgia.  He was well known in this community and was a quiet, peaceable citizen.  His remains were brought up on the T & N O passenger this afternoon and will be buried at the Fairview cemetery, four miles east from town.

A second Obituary appeared in The Daily Sentinel in October several months after his death; it reads as follows:

Nacogdoches Chronicle, October 16, 1902 Obituary

            W. A. Partin, died 17 July 1902, lived and spent many of his days near Nacogdoches.

He is listed in the home of his parents in both the 1860 and the 1870 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

Thomas                      15        M         W                                            Texas

But, Jesse Thomas does not appear in the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, nor in the marriage records in Nacogdoches County, Texas and there is no marker for him in the Family Plot in Fairview Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  There is also no records in Cason Monk Funeral Home on his death. It is possible that he moved off but it is not known where or when he went.

III.-3.  JOHN P. PARTIN

John M. Partin, son of Nancy Marlessie Cornelsion and Thomas F. (Franklin?) Partin, was born  7 January 1851 in probably Coffee County or Grundy County, Tennessee.  John died 24 May 1884 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

It is indicated by the tombstone that marks his grave in Fairview Cemetery that John served in the Confederate State Army.  The marker is obviously old and it does not give any information on the unit he served in.  It only says "C.S.A.".

There is a Picture of a John P. Partin in Nacogdoches County Families the Bicentennial Book published by the Nacogdoches County Genealogical Society; but it is not sure which John P. Partin it is.

There is no indication that this John P. Partin ever married and very little information has been obtained on this John P. Partin.

III.-5. & 6.  SEPHRONA PARTIN and ADLEIDE PARTIN

Sephrona Partin, daughter of Nancy Marlessie Cornelison and Thomas F. (Franklin?) Partin, was born about 1857 in Texas, probably either Cooke County or Nacogdoches County, Texas.

Adleide Partin, daughter of Nancy Marlessie (Mayfield??) and Thomas F. (Franklin?) Partin, was born about 1860 in Texas, probably either Cooke County or Nacogdoches County, Texas.

The 1860 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas is the only Census that lists Sephrona and Adleide Partin as seen below.

1860 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas

Thomas Parton          37        M         W        Farmer                       Tennessee

Neither of the girls appear in the 1870 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas in which Thomas and Nancy Partin are living in Nacogdoches County, Texas with only their four sons.

III.-1.-1.  ORITER "ARTIE" PARTIN

Oriter "Artie" Partin, daughter of Caledonia E. A. "Callie" Cornelison and William Anderson Partin, was born  9 May 1880 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

Artie married on 18 April 1900 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Dr. John Kendrick Castleberry.  John was the son of Lucinda Elender Brantley and Rev. Simeon Castleberry.  John was born 8 August 1880 in Van Zandt County, Texas.

John's Father, Rev. Simeon Castleberry was a Baptist Minister and the son of Temperance Castleberry and Jesse Castleberry.  Simeon was born 23 December 1842 in Randolph County, Georgia and died 28 January 1918 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, were he is buried in Saint's Rest Cemetery in the Door Community of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  On the 12th of May 1864 Rev. Simeon Castleberry married Lucinda Elender Brantley in Keatchie, Louisiana.  Lucinda was the daughter of William Brantley and was born 13 August, 1844 in McNairy County, Tennessee and she died 1 January 1933 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

Dr. John Kendrick Castleberry had numerous brothers and sisters consisting of several other doctors; they were Dr. William Thomas Castleberry, born 15 March 1865 in DeSota Parrish, Louisiana, married 1st. Rosa Lee Honeycutt, 2nd. Martha Elizabeth Perkins; George F. Castleberry, born 1866 and died 1870;  James W. Castleberry, born 1868 and died 1870; Alice Florence Castleberry, born 1870 and married 1st. John Jefferson Mayhar, 2nd. Oscar Peter Van Shoubrouek; Susan Ellen Castleberry, born 1872 and married 1st. Harry        Albert Chapman, 2nd. Fred Eric Schuh; Dr. Marion Cornelius Castleberry, born 29 November 1873 in Panola County, Texas; died 4 April 1915 in Alazan, Nacogdoches County, Texas, married Martha Melvina Crawford (Maggie White Hill?); Laura Magdalene Castleberry, born 1877 and married Dr. Thomas Anderson Summers; Boney C. Castleberry, born 23 October 1884 and married 1st. Lula E. Owens; 2nd. Mrs. Alice Maxey Webb.

After their marriage John studied in Galveston, Texas, St. Louis, Missouri, Memphis, Tennessee, graduated in 1904 from Gate City Medical College and School of Pharmacy in Texarkana, Arkansas-Texas. He went on to Cincinnati, Ohio where he studies Medicine and Surgery, interning in the General Hospital in that city and graduated in 1908.

On January 21, 1908 Dr. John K. Castleberry was admitted by the State Board of Medical Examiners of Texas to practice Medicine and Surgery.

For a short period of time John had a practice in Shelby County, but later settled in the Sacul Community of Nacogdoches County, Texas, and finally open a practice on the former site of the Old Stone Fort which had stood on Main Street, now the site of Commercial State Bank.

He was a life member of a Scholastic Medical Fraternity in Cincinnati called "Eclectic Philpmathians".  John was also a Masons Milam Lodge #2 and reached the highest degree of Royal Arch Mason.

Artie died 12 July 1922 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Family Oral History states that he and his nurse, Dora Pearl Hough Terry,  poisoned Artie Partin Castleberry and the nurses' husband, Luther Ulyesses Terry, so they could be married.

Mrs. Pauline Turner Tillis, remembers the stories her Mother told her about the death of Orator Partin Castleberry, who was her (Exra Partin Turner) cousin.  The stories say that Dr. Castleberry became involved with his nurse and wanted to marry her but she was already married as was he.  The stories indicate that Dr. Castleberry helped the lady dispose of her husband and then used the same type of poison to kill Orator and after a reasonable time married the nurse.  This writer has never found anything to prove or disprove this family story.  Dr. John Kendrick Castleberry did remarry to Mrs. Dora Pearl Hough Terry, widow of Luther Ulyesses Terry and had one son John D. Castleberry, who was a  World War II Veteran.

Just two short years after the death of his first wife, Oriter "Artie" Partin, on the 15th of July 1924 Dr. John Kendrick Castleberry died in Nacogdoches County, Texas of pneumonia and he was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas.

In many of the genealogical books on the Cemeteries of Nacogdoches County, Texas several of the children of Oriter "Artie" Partin Castleberry are listed as the children of Dora Pearl Hough Terry Castleberry and this is a gross error.  There was only one son born to Dora P. and Dr. John Castleberry.
