Ties That Bind
As Clive turns over a prisoner (Couture), he is told he will recieve a commendation for his
effort.
Clive warns his fellow officer to be careful.....soon after they leave
town, Couture overpowers and kills him. (Couture intends to seek revenge on Bennett).
Later, Clive is in the office talking with Jake when a man enters and inquires about a young
boy, "He is eleven years old and his name is William." He tells the mountie he is Willie's father.
Clive heads for Jack's cabin to inform him of the news...he tells Willie to leave. "I have to speak
with the marshal in private Willie."
Willie looks to Jack to see if he should obey.
The marshal nods his approval.
Marie makes Willie take a bath. Then she and the boys argue over who should tell him.
Reluctantly, Jack tells him that his father is in town and wants to see him.
Jack finds Willie's dad at the cemetery.
Jon-Luc LeCarre introduces himself, Jack ain't
none too friendly.
LeCarre shows Jack documents that prove he is
the boy's father, but the marshal wants to know
why he's come to Bordertown after all these
years.
Jon-Luc explains:" I met Katherine on a ship, crossing the Atlantic, I was a deck hand...we ran
away together. It was hard for me to work in America...all I knew was how to sail. When Willie
was born, Katherine never recovered....I was away when she died. I promised myself I would send
for Willie when I had enough money or a better position...Listen, Mr. Craddock...if I didn't feel
you had a real interest in William, I would resent you...and your questions."
Jack glares..."You break that little boy's
heart...you'll have me ta answer to."
Unable to cope with the prospect of loosing Willie, Jack decides to leave town fer a spell.
He tells Willie he's "goin' fishin and I don't
feel like company...all right!"
"So you're just going to run away Jack?"
"Ya know Bennett...fer all yer learnin' you
ain't none too smart."
Jack sets up his camp and settles down for a cup of coffee...he hears a rustle in the trees
and instinctively knows it's Willie.
"Why can't you be my father?"
"Cuz ya got one...an' he wants ya, that's why."
Jack tells Willie that if he follows the north
star he'll always be able to find his way home.
*sniffle*
In the morning Jack has his coffee, then goes to the stream to wash his face. He finds the body
of the lawman Couture murdered and knows the killer has headed back to Bordertown.
He hurries to warn Clive....as the two are standing on the steps of the detachment, Willie
runs out of the livery. "Corporal Bennett! Otto says your horse is sick!"
Jack watches from the steps as Clive walks towards the livery stable.
As an afterthought, Willie adds;
"The other man says to come quick!"
Craddock knows the other man must be
Couture and yells out a warning to Bennett
just as Couture takes a shot at the mountie.
Jack saves Willie from the crossfire.
Couture is killed.
Later that day Willie talks with his dad. He is having second thoughts about taking Willie back
to France and away from his
family in Bordertown.
As the stage is getting ready to pull out,
a very sad Jack passes Willie his suitcase.
"I don't need it, my dad says I can stay."
The marshal is overjoyed and scoops the
little boy up in his arms.
"Thanks dad."
