Jack takes Marie on a picnic in the hills outside of town. As they enjoy the view, she tells Jack that
her nephew Paul Dumont is coming to Bordertown
for a visit (he is the nephew of her late husband).
Their lunch is interrupted by the riderless
mountie payroll wagon as it races past. They gather up their things and follow it back to town.
Clive catches the wagon as it rushes past the
detachment, he quickly searches it for the payroll
and discovers it gone.
Returning to the detachment for his rifle,
Clive asks Jake (who is sweeping the floor),
"Where's Craddock?"
Jake informs him that Jack has taken Marie
on a picnic.
As he leaves town in search of the robbers, he meets Craddock and the doctor returning.
Jack offers to help him search and Marie goes along in case the mounties are hurt.
In a clearing, they find the strongbox...empty,
and the mail scattered all over the ground.
Jack reads part of a letter, "I'm sorry to inform
you that your request for promotion has been
denied....who do you suppose that one's for"?
Back in town, the lawmen examine the wagon one more time. They agree it was an inside job.
"Looks like you got a couple 'a runners there corporal." Jack smiles.
Clive tells Bruno to saddle up...he needs
him to go to Fort McLeod as quickly as
possible.
Clive is writing a message for Bruno to deliver.
I didn't think you had any crooked or bent arrows
in your outfit...I thought that little Queenie 'a yours
picked ya personal."
"Yah, same way honest Abe Lincoln handpicked your Union army." Clive remarks.
Bruno yells from outside, "Corporal Bennett! I'm ready!"
Jack chuckles, "Paul Revere."
"What?"
"An American hero...just one 'a many."
Clive instructs Bruno to get to Fort McLeod without
stopping. He needs a discription of the two mounties
who were on the payroll wagon.
"Guess this whole mess puts dirt on your stripes huh?
Jack torments him,
In the saloon, Clive runs into Clara, the saloon girl. She is curious about the mail, as she
'corresponds' with several gentleman friends.
Meanwhile he and Jack spot Marie dining with a handsome young man. They invite themselves
to join the couple, and are happy to discover that the young man is Marie's nephew, Paul.
Back at the doctors house, Marie gives Paul a gift. A medallion that belonged to her late husband
Paul tells Marie he would like to take one last walk around Bordertown before he leaves.
When the stage arrives later in the day, Clive tells the driver that they have to hold up for a while,
he also tells Otto that no one is to take a horse from the livery stable. No one can leave town
until Bruno returns.
He informs Marie and Paul (who was
hoping to leave on the stage coach).
Marie polishes the medallion and decides to pack it in her nephews suitcase....she finds the stolen
payroll.
Clive tells her he will sort it when he has time,
but he may have to read the letters out loud to
determine who they belong to.
Paul trys to get a horse from the livery but Otto refuses him. He returns to his aunt's house and
begs her not to turn him in when she confronts him. He explains that he didn't kill anyone, his
Otto has told the lawmen that he is suspicious of Paul and they hurry to Marie's to question him.
When they enter the front door, Paul runs out the back. As Clive chases after him, Jack stands on
the front porch and fires a warning shot.
Realizing he is caught, Paul pulls a gun on Clive.
Jack covers his partner.
The corporal wrestles the gun from Marie's nephew
and takes him into custody.
That evening, over tea, Sally consoles Marie. Jake knocks on the door and tells the women he
thought he should aprise them of the situation in the saloon...."corporal Bennett is reading the
letters out loud, the whole town is there" (much to Clara's embarrassment.)
They decide it would be quite entertaining to join the others in the saloon.
But no sign of the two mounties who were
guarding the payroll.
partner left him to fend for himself after his horse died.
