Medicine Woman
As Marie prepares to close the store for the night,
a young Blackfoot waits outside in the darkness.
After he sees her leave, he breaks into the store
searching for food.
Realizing she has forgotten something,
Marie returns to the store...both she and the
Blackfoot are startled. He rushes past her,
knocking the storekeeper to the floor. Her
lantern sets the store ablaze.
The townsfolk....including Jack and Clive...come to
the rescue. Jack carries Marie to safety, then returns
to help put out the flames.
Marie is shaken, but she tells the lawmen
she saw an indian...a Blackfoot.
In the morning Jack and Clive take
Marie to the Blackfoot village, she tells
them the man who broke into her store
is not there.
A young man suddenly runs from his hiding
spot....Clive tackles him and brings him back
for Marie to identify.
Howling Dog is arrested and taken back to
Bordertown.
Meanwhile the town is abuzz with news of Wes Eckley's impending marriage. His mail order
bride is due in on the next stage.
Wes is a might nervous about meeting his
bride to be...but the corporal is more
concerned about the flowers he ordered
for Marie...all the way from France.
At the barbershop, Liam mentions the fire and the arrest of the Blackfoot to his latest customer,
....Marie asks Howling Dog why he broke into her store. He tells her that the indian agent
(Erskin) is stealing their food and his people are starving.
who just so happens to be Erskin, the indian agent.
Clive questions Erskin about the food supply, he
tells Clive he has reciepts to prove the food was delivered.
They tell her they can't arrest him based on the
word of an indian....they'd need a white
witness in order to charge him.
Marie drops the charges against Howling Dog.
He is released from jail and Marie supplies him
with food for the village.
.....while Erskin watches from across the street.
Erskin murders him and takes him to the village as a warning for the others to keep quiet.
That night Marie has a visit from a young Blackfoot woman. She tells the doctor that Erskin has
murdered Howling Dog....and that he is selling the indian's food to white settlers.
Marie tells the lawmen about the visit. She
wants them to arrest the indian agent.
At the store...Marie notices the dress on Lucy
Bradley's doll. (It's made from sack cloth...)
Mrs. Bradley quickly leaves the store with
her daughter.
Marie has a plan....
she makes up a mixture of dye and asks Jake to put it on the sacks of food that Erskin has in
his wagon. The next morning, as the indian agent leaves Bordertown, Jake tells the doctor...
"it's done."
Later in the day, Wes Eckley's mail order bride arrives.
Wes seems less then pleased...but she insists on a wedding!
Willie runs to marshal Craddocks cabin.
...and is shocked to see he's taking a bath.
(and doing his laundry at the same time!)
He is puzzled why the marshal would
take a bath and steal flowers.
Willie tells corporal Bennett that the marshal is acting
strange.....first he took a bath.......
......and then he stole the flowers.
As Jack is about to present Marie with the
bouquet of violets....
Clive interrupts them.
The townsfolk are holding Wes Eckley's wedding reception in the saloon.
Marie makes an announcement: "There is a terrible disease in town, you have it if your hands
are blue."
Mrs. Bradley yells, "MY hands are blue! What kind of disease do I have?"
Marie tells her what she has done...Mrs. Bradley spills the beans on Erskin. He's been selling
government food supplies, intended for the indians, to the settlers.
Clive has found his white witness.
Meanwhile Erskin is at the Blackfoot village to force them to sign more food reciepts.
This time they stand up to him, and as Clive, Jack and Marie approach, they see Erskin
being beaten by the Blackfoot.
The lawmen arrest him.
They promise the Blackfoot people that they
will watch over their village and make sure
there are no more 'Erskins'.
