Let There Be Light
Marie's old friend (Emile) arrives in Bordertown. He shows off his new invention, the bicycle.
"Someday it will replace the horse." he tells them.
"Looks like you should be hitchin' it to one."
They see smoke behind the bank and rush to find it's cause.
Wendell as bought a generator and plans to bring Bordertown into the 1890's.
He asks them not to touch the bulbs as they are very
expensive. Jack hits one with his finger and it breaks.
Clive tries to explain how electricity works. But he really isn't sure. Jack figures they could "save a
whole lotta trouble if ya catch yerself a bunch 'a glow worms n' lightnin' bugs n' put 'em in a jar."
Wendell wants to keep the bank lit up all night , the marshal tells him it will encourage robbers.
Zac wants lights in the saloon too, so Willie and Emile run power lines across the street.
That evening they turn on the lights in the saloon, just as Jack rides into town. He gets tangled
in the power lines (which are too low) and the lights in the saloon go out.
When the line is repaired, Jack enters the saloon.
"Reminds me 'a the always harsh n' unforgivin' sun."
A woman complains to Zac that the glasses are filthy.
There is an arguement at the card table, someone is caught cheating.
"What'd you call this Clive... progress?" Jack asks sarcastically.
The next day Wendell tells Emile the marshal is right...lights in the bank may encourage robbers.
Clive suggests he can use the electricity to rig up an alarm on the safe.
Marie suggests they use a bell, everyone agrees on this idea. The switch is outside, under the back
step. A lightbulb will show when the alarm is on.
That evening Zac has electric hour (1st drink is free).
Walking to the saloon Clive tells Marie, "Craddock is a dying breed."
They meet Emile who is just leaving the saloon. Jack reluctantly joins the gang at electric hour.
The lights get dim and Wendell asks Willie to go stoke the boiler.
Meanwhile Emile has shut off the alarm and is inside about to rob the bank.
Willie notices the alarm is off and turns the switch back on.
The bell rings and everyone rushes to the bank, just as Willie realizes the generator is going to
blow, he tries to shut off the power and he gets electrocuted.
They catch Emile with the bank money just as they hear Willie cry out.
Emile rushes to shut down the generator, Jack follows close behind.
He finds Willie unconcious. "Willie! Willie!" Marie pushes him aside,"Get out of my way Jack."
Clive helps Marie with Willie, Jack dissappears.
The marshal goes back inside the saloon and shoots out all of the light bulbs.
The next morning Jack is pleased to learn that Willie is feeling better.
Marie explains that Emile robbed the bank to finance his newest invention...he plans to
motorize the bicycle...they all chuckle.
"You can have electric lights on yer side, but there
....since we confiscated this here bicycle...I was thinkin' it might be good fer Willie."
Clive grins "Are you going to show him how to ride it Jack?"
"Don't look all that complicated corporal."
"You look very handy with it Jack, I'll give you $10 for your horse!"
"Hey, how do ya stop this thing!?"
Jack dissappears into the Livery Stable and there is a loud crash.
Jack thinks the whole thing is nonsense....
...and is disappointed when Willie would rather help with the lights than go fishin'.
He is not impressed by the new electric lights....
The lawmen run from the saloon towards the bank...Jack notices Emile's wagon in the street.
Clive tells Marie that Emile will serve 10 days in jail.
Jack smiles and shakes his head. "Leastways he showed us we ain't ready fer the future."
Clive is amazed.
"Maybe we aren't ready yet Jack, but it's the way of the
future...I'm sure of it."
ain't never gonna be any on my side...not while
I'm in charge...
