The Lady and the Corpse
Dom returns some borrowed books to old Pete who lives in a shack north of town. He is greeted
in the doorway by Lily Garneau, who explains that her mother and Pete were very good friends,
and that she (Lily) is there taking care of him...he is suffering from the flu.
Dom leaves the books with her and sends his best regards to Pete.
When Lily steps back inside the cabin we see she has a friend ( Ted Maddox).
Lily and Ted steal the old man's gold dust which is hidden beneath the floorboards.
Placing Pete's body into a coffin, where they also hide the small sacks of goldust, they make their
way to Bordertown, hoping to cross, undetected, into Montana.
Jack and Clive are stopping everyone
coming into town, due to the flu epidemic,
before they are allowed to leave.
The lawmen are both taken with the lovely french woman.
Pete's body is taken to the freight office where Marie will varify the cause of death.
Jack and Clive argue over where Miss Garneau should sleep...Clive wins the arguement when Lily
declare's..."I am too tired to take another step." so Clive shows her to his quarters. As they leave
the room, the mountie tells her he will escort her to breakfast in the morning.
While Jack is licking his wounds...Marie wonders "Should I be jealous?"
Jack tells Marie that he will take her to breakfast.
" I said ta Clive jus' this mornin'...I said I'm takin' Marie ta breakfast...that's what I said."
Jack is suspicious of Miss Garneau, when Dom shows him a letter old Pete asked him to open
upon his death...he leaves Dom two sacks of gold dust and the rest goes to his indian friends.
Clive is angry at Jack's accussations, but decides to confront Lily. She pretends to be offended.
Lily and Ted make a run for it...Jack and Clive are in hot persuit.
Lily claims to know nothing about the gold...
BUT...when she gets into Clives quarters she opens his trunk and looks for the hidden gold dust.
"Looking for these Lily?"
(Lily hides the gold dust in Clives trunk)
(It is obvious that her intentions were to kill Ted... and then return to get the gold.)
"Anythin' I can do ta make yer stay
more en-joyable ma'am.......
....you let me know."
Anyhow...poor old Pete is lying dead in his bed.
everyone must be checked by the doctor
The next morning:
Lily runs to Clive and hugs him.
Back at the detachment:
She trys to sweet talk him...which of course doesn't work..so she pulls a teeny tiny little gun
from her pocket...Jack comes to the rescue just in time.
She surrenders to the corporal and as the camera pulls back Jack is no where in sight!
(maybe she just imagined he was there?........it happens....
Jack and Dom ride out to Pete's cabin and discover the gold is missing.
When the lawmen corner the pair, Lily turns on her accomplice and Jack is forced to kill him.
"I need to rest, I am so tired."
He is in the doorway pointing his colt .45 at the pretty lady.
Jack searches through Lillies saddlebags.
