| The Taste Of New Wine
- Page 1 Every American should be required to read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. Every immigrant who wishes to become a citizen of the United States should be required to sit down and read the Constitution and then pass a comprehensive test. Every Christian should read the entire Bible and thoroughly understand Matthew, Acts, Romans and Hebrews. Understanding these will yield a satisfactory understanding of the entire Bible. During the past four weeks I have made many notations of the parallel between the beginning of the church and the beginning of our Republic. No, the two are not synonymous. However, no other nation, with the possible exception of Israel of old, can make the claim of having God in the very frame-work and foundation of its beginnings. The Jews thought they had a corner on God and the Prophetic Writing of Moses and the other Prophets. But they were to come to a rude awakening. They were warned repeatedly, but the Jews were not listening. Jesus said, "Think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham." Matt. 3:9. Again, Jesus said, "Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire." Matt. 7:19. In the first verse the stones are the Gentiles. The second verse, the tree is the Jewish nation. Further Jesus said, "Neither do men put new wine into old bottles; else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out: but they put new wine in new bottles, and both are preserved." Matthew 7:17. The Israelites made bottles from skin in which to store new wine (fresh grape juice). As it would ferment, the skins would expand. A fresh batch of new wine would burse the skins, as the were already expanded to capacity. Do you get the picture here? The Jews had hogged God's Word unto themselves, rather than sharing it with the Gentile world. They were expanded to capacity with self-indulgence, were as dead as the stones and as sterile as the fruitless trees. New wine, the Gospel of Jesus Christ was on the way, and would require new skins, or bottles, the Gentiles, to spread it. On the Day of Pentecost, New Wine was tasted. |
