| The Opened Hand -- At Thanksgiving Time Some of the most pleasant memories from my life on the farm revolves around evening chore time. The milk cows knew that when the sun was nearing setting, it was feeding and milking time. All that was needed for the horses and goats to come in for feeding was the rustling of the hay. The fun part was always when I started walking about the barn lot tossing corn from my grain bucket for the chickens. They knew what was in my hands and the bucket. No coaxing was needed. Feeding time was always such a fun time down on the farm. What a beautiful picture of God's children in relation to their heavenly Father! Hear what the psalmist says, "The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing." Psa. 145:15, 16. It was a simple matter for the Old Testament readers to see the parallel between the opened hand of the farmer and the opened hand of the heavenly Father who provided richly for their daily needs. Theirs was a largely rural society. Most people today live in an impersonal, predominantly mechanized, urban environment. Our children (and even we) consider the local supermarket to be the ultimate source of food and drink -- and the department store or mall the ultimate source of all of our necessities. Alas, in our affluent secular society we are in danger of simply taking all of our material blessings for granted. It is highly important that we, during this Thanksgiving season, first, recognize with gratitude the True Source of our daily sustenance, and, second, pass this knowledge along to our children. We must constantly remind ourselves and those entrusted to our care to look beyond the supermarket -- beyond the department store -- beyond the shopping mall -- beyond the bright lights and loud music. We must look to the opened hand of a heavenly Father who "so loved us" -- and still loves us, that He gave His only Son to live and die for us -- and, with Him, continues "freely to give us all things" to support our body and life. |
