| The Advent
The Advent is the year's greatest time, for it has merriment and joy and sharing at its very center. For centuries Philippians 4:4-7 was read in Christian churches on Sunday before Christmas. I would suggest reading the fourth verse daily during December: "Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say rejoice." NKJV. "REJOICE!" is the only command in the entire Bible, repeated two times in the same verse. The Advent represents the coming of God to man, by means of the incarnation -- God becoming man -- so that He might become Savior and Lord, through love expressed by death. This love is what the Advent expresses so beautifully. The Advent is alive with joy because it is the beginning of hope -- hope for sin-enslaved man, who will have a Deliverer and a Savior. The Advent is a great moment because it is filled with love, hope and promise, all the things that life needs, but finds so seldom. When men close their hearts to the promise and possibility of the Advent, then they open life for the dulling realities of life without love and hope. The Advent is God reaching out with the promise of love to men who have been unlovable and unwanted. It opens the door of hope for men everywhere. Let us, then, look forward to the coming days, both as Advent time and as Revival time -- preparing our hearts for Christmas when penitence will lead to faith and faith will lead to joy unspeakable.
