A Zest For Life

As a Christian, do you wake up each morning with a jubilant, "Praise God! Another day to serve God and keep His commandments?" Or do you wake up with another "Ho hum. Another day at the same old grind"?  Do you wake up Sunday morning and groan with, "Good grief! It is Sunday, so guess I have to get ready for church"?

How often have we greeted the sunrise of a new day with a listless yawn and a depressing sense of boredom? How often have we reached for our robe as though we were about to don a funeral garment?

Admittedly, there are days when e will feel like that. But the attitude of "ho hum" is not God's will for us. The apostle Paul was constantly encouraging the early Christians (and us) to rejoice! Only a few verses later he comes back to this recurring theme: "Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, Rejoice!"  This is the only verse in the entire Bible where a command is repeated back to back in the same verse. So, cheer up, brother and sister, and for God's sake Rejoice!"

The redeemed, or the believer in Christ is to develop and exhibit a zest for life. Who, more than us Christians, has a greater right to rejoice? Knowing that each new day is a day of divine grace, he is to sweep away the cobwebs of "ho hum" and to breathe deeply and joyfully of the clean, refreshing air of God's abundant love and mercy. The Christian can go joyfully to his daily task. Do we do that?  Sometime ago I started responding to people's inquiry of how I was doing, with a smiling face and a zesty "Fantabulous!" I have never failed to get their attention and many times move into an enlightening conversation.

Just a thought from Parson Don across the Garden Gate.
