Adventure: Under the Sea; Scuba Diving the Barrier Reef (October 2003)
- Up from Brizzy, north along the Queensland coast to Townsville,
the gang and I began taking the PADI Open Water Course. The first days
were spent decked out in scuba gear at the bottom of a pool. After we
familiarised ourselves with safety and equipment, it was time to test
the open water.
... the open water, way cool!
Swimming with the fishes, as if in a giant fish tank, we set off to
see our friends the water breathers. From the Great Barrier Reef to
the Yongala Shipwreck the team explored underwater treasures found 20
meters deep. From the pristine blue waters of the Coral Sea, to the
spectacular plant life thriving in an endless maze of coral, not to
mention all the tropica fish, everything was simply unreal (Gallery
to come).
A few things about diving:
One, “equalize” and equalize often. The air pressure
expanding and contracting in mainly your ears as you
rise
and descend in the water can be excruciatingly painful. My
ears hurt for a month after the trip. Two, learn to use a compass
well, it’s so easy to get lost while wandering around on the ocean
floor. Not to mention where the currents might drag you to. You’ll
want to avoid these awfully long swims back to the boat.
