Sunday, 3 June 2001 Green Point Foreshore Reserve - DA for part of controversial cycleway
It is wrong conduct for Council to assess their own DA. This must be done by an independent person.Councillors should not consider parts of the Dilkera Ave cycleway D.A. in isolation. The DA. should be rejected and consideration only given after there has been an exhibition of the whole project and the environmental impact statement assessed by an independent person and a report presented to Council. Immediate Management Challenge
The Green Point Reserve Committee can now only give tainted advice to council because it has been stacked with people with the vested interest of not having a cycleway near their properties. The recent public meeting only considered a relocation of the cycleway from near properties. It did not consider the impact of the proposal on the Reserve. Green Point Foreshore Reserve - Plan of ManagementCouncil reaffirmed support for the integrity of the existing Green Point Plan of Management and for the sensitive development of the Reserve 16/ 10/ 2000. The Plan of Management was funded by the NSW Government and prepared over a long period of time with the guidance of professional consultants and is widely accepted. * Opposition to the PoM cycleway sharing the fire trail protecting houses backing onto the reserve means that council should not continue with the Cycleway. * The Fire trails are in existence and the extra clearing deeper in the reserve is not warranted. A 2.5 metre wide cycleway requires a 7 to 8 metre wide clearing. * The High Conservation Habitat area should only be served by narrow walking paths and board walks. The PoM requires that walkways be only 600mm to1.2 metre as max. width. * The off-road cycle link has been completed in the reserve from Green Point Drive to Ross St. The Dilkera Ave branch cycleway need not be built. * Croudace Bay Road is the official 1997 Bike Plan Regional Cycleway Route. History Portions 35A and 36A together with the adjacent Portions 37A and 38A identified for a 'County National Park' in 1956 by the Lake Macquarie Shire Council and by the Northumberland County Council. Planning Authority 1948/63.
§ The 154 ha. Green Point Foreshore Bushland Reserve created unfortunately with a number of finger subdivisions projecting into the reserve and at a cost of about $4.5 million dollars. Council must consider the impact of the whole cycleway –not just part. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Back to Issues Index |
