Release 3rd December 2000 The Editor I like to think that the Newcastle Herald embraces our heritage and had hoped that Newcastle Newspapers P/L "Eldon Chambers" in Bolton Street might have been retained as a living heritage building in the current redevelopment. The facade is at least to be retained as a sop to heritage. The attitude of the Herald to our industrial heritage is however worse and could be likened to its predecessor’s temperament when our convict coal mines dating from 1801 were sealed up beneath Fort Scratchley, "happily, for ever closed from human sight"- 29/1/1885 Page 2. A more enlightened and realistic perspective to heritage values is thankfully slowly emerging in Newcastle but it hasn’t quite reached the Herald yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Back to Issues Index |
