Re: Our Nobbys Lighthouse

Secretary of the National Trust Ann Hardy is to be complimented on her article “Proud light dimmed by restaurant move” The Herald 2/3.

I find it difficult to understand why the Newcastle Port Corporation and Nobbys Lighthouse Pty Ltd continued with a project impacting the Australia’s unique Nobbys Lighthouse in obvious breach of Commonwealth law. (Sec 26 EPBC Act 1999)

The Port Corporation in their invitation for Expressions of Interest May 2003 stated that they wanted “Adaptive reuse of the existing cottages and signal station”, not new buildings impacting the unique Nobbys Lighthouse.

Peak Conservation groups of NSW want Commonwealth assessment by public Inquiry so that the Port Corporation can be openly examined before an independent commissioner.
