Dear Sir,

Coal River and the City of Newcastle

The Gazetting of the Coal River Precinct on the NSW State Heritage Register is welcomed.

We were pleased with the earlier promises but we are now particularly satisfied that the gazettal is authorised on the eve of Newcastle’s 200 anniversary year.

Newcastle is the second city of New South Wales and the Port is the largest coal export port in the world.

The Hunter Region has been the powerhouse of the state and the Coal River Precinct is the place where it all started 200 years ago.

The Anniversary of the Founding of the City is important to Newcastle the State and to Australia.

The significance of Nobbys Island to the Aboriginal people as the home of the Giant Kangaroo must also be acknowledged. He shakes the island when he is disturbed and causes rocks to fall.

Coal River has an immediate link to the March 1804 Vinegar Hill insurrection and to maritime, military and industrial development.

In many ways this precinct is the focal point of the Hunter’s Heritage and deserves to be effectively recognised and presented in a professional way.

The gazettal of the Coal River Precinct on the State Heritage Register is an important milestone in the maturity of Newcastle.

Yours Sincerely

Doug Lithgow
