After months of preparations, worrying and wondering our boys are finally here!! Let us take a quick minute and share our birth story with you. On or about Labor Day weekend...how appropriate...I started having contractions. Both Matt and I knew our roles well...I sat here and said "time" while Matt timed the duration of my contractions and the time between them...we thought we were on our way to having Labor Day babies...wrong!! On Tuesday, September 4th, 2001 (the day after Labor Day) we had our regular doctor's appointment. At this appointment the doctor told us that I was dialated to 2 and effaced to 80%..not much progress from the last appointment...but lo and behold...Dr. Less tells us that he will schedule us for an induction on Monday September 10, 2001!! We pretty much muddled our way through the rest of the week quietly anticipating the long awaited arrival of our boys. On Sunday, September 9, 2001, as we were sitting at home..I thought my water had broke (found out later it had not) but we headed to the hospital. Once we got to the hospital, they checked me and there had been progress since my last appointment and I was dialated to 3. At this point, Matt and I along with the medical staff, made the decision to sleep through the night, and begin the induction first thing in the morning.
Monday, September 10, 2001, at about 9:00 AM the nurses came in to start my IV with pitocin (drug used to induce labor); however, it took about 1/2 hour and 4 tries to get the IV in (ouch!!!). Once they got the Pitocin going, I started having pretty regular contractions..that of course brought pretty regular pain with them!! Time for the epidural..what an awesome drug!! At about 1:00 it was decided that I was completely dialated and we were being moved to the OR (just for size purposes). Once in the OR I was allowed to begin pushing...after 12 minutes of pushing...Mitchell Joseph made his entrance into this world..weighing a healthy 7 lbs and 19.5 inches long!!! It was very strange for me to have given birth and then know that I had to do it again!! We started pushing about 4-5 minutes after Mitchell was born; however, what happened was that I eneded up delivering Mitchell's placenta, which was not supposed to happen. Due to the fact that Mitchell's placenta had been delivered and I was now bleeding from this, they did not want Connor's water to break and to aspirate any of the blood. Time for an emergency C-section!!! At 2:03 PM, Connor Michael made his entrance into this world weighing in at 5lbs 2 oz and 19.5 inches long!! Not quite what we had planned to happen, but both our boys are healthy and strong!!
