Waxed Tablets
http://medievalwriting.50megs.com/forms/waxtablet.htm
Waxed tablets generally represent a stage of the writing process which has been lost to us.  People in the middle ages took notes by writing on these.  A wax tablet was a form of writing material which had a continuous existence from antiquity through the middle ages.   It was a small frame of wood filled with wax which could be written on with a stylus.  Because the writing could be erased and the tablet reused, it was used as a notebook for various writing purposes.
