Today the troops were issued their uniforms and equipment. The uniform is

very loose on me seeing as how I am the youngest of the recruits at age 16. It

seems like the age of the recruits keeps getting lower and lower seeing as how

my neighbor was 19 when he was recruited a few year ago. I have joined a

squad with three other recruits. Thomas, who is 17, attended the same school

as me. He seems like a lively chap but is nervous about going into battle.

Freddy, 18, has no friends and seems like he has no need for them. Ever since

we have left for the military he hasnt said a word to anyone, but I think he

might come around in a couple of weeks. And the last recruit, Smitty, 17 as

well, has been my dearest friend ever since grammar school. We have lived

down the street from one another and his family has always looked out for me.
I feel nervous leaving my mother all alone with my 3 brothers. She may not

be able to keep them in line without the help of me. Things might have been

easier on my mother if my dad hadnt have died in that tragic factory accident,

god rest his soul. Smittys father had always looked out after me; gave me

some one to look up to. He is in fact the reason why I have enlisted in the army.
Smittys father made him join the forces right after school because his father

had made him do the same. I felt obliged to join as well because he was like a

father to me, and if I was his son I would have been made to join as well.

We are currently being issued our rifles. We are going out now to make sure

we are capable of firing and reloading our rifles in the field. Ill will right back

later and tell how things are going.
