Trench warfarae was very rough and harsh on the marines. They had to deal with little food, no sleep, and being constantly attacked. Shells were always flying by the trenches and you were always very close to death. For out the time of your trench stay, you would only progress about 2 miles or so due to the invention of the machine gun which killed lots of people when they tried to enter no man's land. But guns weren't the only thing that could kill you in the trenches. Many of the recruits contracted lots of diseases such as, cholera, trench foot, lice, and even sometimes molaria. This also led to a high death count in the army. Trench life was a whole lot worse when gas was set off in the trenches. All you had to protect yourself was a gas mask and sometimes that didn't even do the job. Trench life was very rough and very hard on the soldiers who had to endure it.
