Lessons From James
You Can Conquer Doubt
1. Read James 1:5-8 Do you see a kind of paradox at work in what James is saying?
-what does this say about our own ability to improve through “self-help”?
2. List the characteristics of a wave on the ocean. How many of these characteristics do you think apply to a definition of “double-mindedness”?
3. What is the main problem with a double minded person, according to James? (hint- 1 word)
4. Read 1 Kings 18:21. What choice does Elijah want the Israelites to make? How does this choice compare with the “brainwashing” that Christians are sometimes accused of and cults often engage in?
5. If you haven’t read the story that follows the previous passage, do so. If you have, simply read the response by the Israelites who had been led astray by the prophets of Baal. That is verse 1 Kings 18:39. What two actions did they do?
-Can you think of a time where you really saw or sensed God’s work in your life? (even if not quite as visually spectacular as this)? How do we respond to this? What about a few days or months later?
6. Read James 4:1-10. According to James, where does doubt come from? What is his solution?
7. Why do you think it is important to attend church and read the bible regularly?
8. Do you see areas in your life where doubt has crept into your faith and blocked you from fully trusting in God? Discuss some of these issues with your group. If you are not comfortable sharing in the group, be sure to talk to the pastor or someone you trust about it and pray that God will indeed give you wisdom to deal with it.
